Meet Stellaluna the Fruit Bat! Charlotte, NC I have been fostering Fruit Bat through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control since January. After spending a few months working on medical recovery, she recently completed a 4-week board and train program with The Perfect Pup to work on her fear aggression. She spent the first 6 years of her life severely undersocialized in a backyard and first needed love and patience - followed by time with experienced professional trainers - to learn to trust the world. I've had some interest but Fruit Bat needs to be in a multi-dog home without young kids. Fruit Bat's musts: * She needs at least one dog sibling, preferably a whole pack! She thrived at training camp living in a large respectful pack and having dogs at home is important for maintaining her confidence. * Confident, shepherd-experienced owner. Her owner must provide Fruit Bat with the structure and guidance she needs to navigate happily in the world. Fruit Bat's preferences: * Land to run on. After spending the first 6 years of her life in a backyard she LOVES the freedom of running in safe/private open space and is very responsive to verbal recall. * Access to some body of water. Although I don't yet have a farm and private pond, sorry Fruit Bat, we enjoy splashing around in creeks for training breaks. Fruit Bat's no-can-dos and ongoing challenges: * No young kids - she doesn't have a bite history but kids come with friends and other visitors, not a good fit * No cats - she is good with small dogs though! * She will need continuous practice with Leash and barrier reactivity. She has made a LOT of progress and is nowhere as scary as she used to be, but she needs an adopter who is committed to consistent training to keep building on the progress she made in board and train. Bottom line - Fruit Bat is a very smart dog who is willing to change her approach to the world. With the right environment and owner, she will thrive and bring so much happiness to her household. But in the wrong environment, she may regress back into her fear reactivity to people and dogs.
