Australian Shepherd mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Jock is a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd mix who recently celebrated his birthday on Memorial Day. He is a loving, sweet, playful, and energetic boy who brings joy and laughter wherever he goes. Deeply people-oriented, Jock loves being close to his family and fully believes he's a lap dog-he will happily curl up beside you (or on you) whenever given the chance. He is almost always the happiest guy in the room and is highly intelligent, thriving when both his mind and body are engaged. Jock enjoys puzzle toys, sniffing games, searching for hidden treats or toys, and learning new commands through mentally stimulating training. He is affectionate, full of personality, and at his best when he has a 'job' to do and is included in structured, interactive activities with his people. He also has a playful, goofy side-he loves dress-up with the kids and will happily tolerate costumes if it means being part of the fun. One of his favorite games is hide-and-seek with his 'dad,' and his excitement when he finds him is unforgettable. Whether he's chasing a ball, solving a puzzle, or joining in family games, Jock approaches everything with enthusiasm, intelligence, and a wagging tail. Jock typically starts his day with an early morning walk or play session to burn off energy, then settles into a relaxed state indoors. He enjoys playing with other dogs and can often be found lounging in his favorite position-on his back with his belly up and all four legs in the air. When it's time to play, he's all in. He loves balls (and takes great interest in trying to destroy them), as well as tug ropes, frisbees, and stuffed toys. He is always ready for a game, whether it's fetch, tug-of-war, or simply spending time with his people. Jock can be a little nervous when meeting new people, especially in busy or chaotic environments, but he typically warms up quickly once he has time to settle-particularly with treats. He is affectionate and eager to bond once comfortable. He generally does well with other dogs, though he can occasionally resource guard food, high-value treats, or toys. Because of this, his adopters should be comfortable managing these situations with structure and clear boundaries. In our home, feeding high-value items separately worked very well. Consistency and routine have been key to helping Jock succeed. He has a designated 'place' mat that he uses during training, meals, and household routines, and he responds very well to structure, positive reinforcement, and clear expectations. When he feels overwhelmed or scared, he can become reactive, so he does best in a calm, predictable environment where his need for space is respected. He also appreciates having a designated quiet area where he can retreat and decompress. In our home, we created a space for him in the garage, and he would often choose to go there on his own when he needed time alone. Jock would do best in a home with a securely fenced yard where he can spend time outside on his own terms, including sunbathing and relaxing. He would thrive with an active family or individual who enjoys walks, outdoor adventures, and including their dog in daily life. He needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation to be at his best, and he enjoys having a purpose and structure within his home environment. He is well-trained and knows all basic commands including sit, down, stay, come ('here'), up, and 'break.' He is house-trained and walks well on a leash. He is not crate-trained, but he is able to be left alone in the home without chewing, destroying, or getting into things, and generally settles well on his own. Vet visits can be stressful for Jock, and to reduce anxiety during exams, he is typically sedated for procedures such as vaccinations and nail trims. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccinations. Based on veterinary guidance, he is also currently on medication for anxiety, which has helped him stay more regulated day to day. Jock was previously raised with a littermate, which created some early challenges requiring additional structure and management. With time, training, and consistency, he has done well with other dogs outside of that dynamic. Jock will make a wonderful companion for someone who can match his energy, provide structure and consistency, and give him the love, patience, and attention he thrives on.
