This tiny 7-pound senior Yorkshire Terrier came from a backyard breeder situation in Clinton after the breeder was evicted from his home. Mickie was initially given away, but the woman who took him quickly realized he needed far more medical care than she could provide. That's how Mickie found his way to Fur Fun Rescue. When Mickie arrived, his left eye had not developed properly. It was painful, constantly oozing, and beyond saving. His dental health was just as bad. His remaining teeth were loose, infected, and literally falling out. It was clear that Mickie had been living with chronic pain for a very long time. Since entering rescue, Mickie has had his left eye removed and all of his remaining teeth extracted. The transformation has been remarkable. He recovered beautifully from both surgeries and probably feels better than he has in years. Despite everything humans have failed to do for him, Mickie absolutely adores his people. His favorite place in the world is wherever his foster mom happens to be. He follows her from room to room, keeping a close eye on her activities. The way he looks at her is enough to melt anyone's heart. It's the kind of look that says complete trust, devotion, and gratitude. Mickie is also discovering that life can be fun. He enjoys going for walks and has worked his way up to walking a mile. At night, he curls up next to his foster mom and sleeps peacefully, content simply to be close to someone who loves him. Mickie only has one eye left and probably doesn't have 20/20 vision in it. He navigates most situations very well, but depth perception can be challenging. He confidently goes up stairs but is scared to go down them. His foster mom is teaching him to use a ramp, and he's making steady progress. His adopter should be willing to continue helping him build confidence with stairs and new environments. Mickie gets along well with other dogs. He doesn't really know how to play yet, which isn't surprising considering his background. Instead, he watches the other dogs carefully and learns from them. Having another friendly dog in the home could be beneficial, but it is not required. His biggest challenge is housetraining. When you've spent years living in a kennel and a filthy environment, understanding that the house should stay clean is not something that comes naturally. Mickie will go outside and will also use a potty pad, but he is not completely reliable. He currently wears a belly band, and his adopter should expect that housetraining will be an ongoing process requiring patience and consistency. Mickie is not looking for a perfect family. He's looking for a compassionate one. He needs someone who understands that senior dogs from neglectful situations don't arrive knowing all the rules. He needs someone who will celebrate the small victories, help him continue learning, and cherish the incredible bond he has to offer. In return, Mickie will give you his whole heart. If you're looking for a tiny shadow, a loyal companion, and a dog who will love you with every ounce of his 7-pound body, Mickie is waiting to meet you. Mickie is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested, microchipped, and has had a full blood panel done.
