ONE YEAR IS FAR TOO LONG... CHESTER IS STILL WAITING. For more than a year, Chester has watched other dogs leave Upland Animal Shelter for their forever homes while he remains behind. He arrived on May 13, 2025. More than a year of kennel doors opening and closing. More than a year of watching people come and go. More than a year waiting for someone to finally say: 'Chester, you're coming home.' And the more we get to know this beautiful dog, the harder it is to understand why he is still waiting. Chester is a 3-year-old, 71-lb German Shepherd mix with everything Shepherd lovers adore, intelligence, loyalty, confidence, attentiveness, and an unexpectedly soft, gentle heart. MEET THE REAL CHESTER. Gentle. Sweet. Calm. Affectionate. Loyal. Loving. Chester is an easygoing, well-mannered gentleman who genuinely enjoys being with people. He is attentive to his handler, listens well, responds to verbal direction, and seems happiest simply sharing the world with someone he trusts. Take him outside and you'll discover what a wonderful companion he can be. Chester walks beautifully on leash. He is relaxed and observant, calmly taking in everything around him. He enjoys exploring without needing to rush through the experience. He's curious, confident and attentive while remaining wonderfully manageable. In public, Chester has shown himself to be calm and nonreactive toward other dogs outside the kennel. He is considered dog-selective, so any potential canine sibling should have a proper introduction. And then there are Chester's very important outdoor responsibilities... Squirrel Watch Captain. Bird Spotter Extraordinaire. Professional Adventure Buddy. Those expressive Shepherd eyes don't miss much! BRING OUT THE BALL! Chester's calm demeanor doesn't mean he doesn't know how to have fun. This boy LOVES fetch. Bring out a ball and his big smile appears. He also loves water and spending time outdoors, making him a wonderful match for someone looking for a dog who can enjoy adventures and playtime but also knows how to settle down and simply enjoy being together. He's intelligent and eager to learn, already knows 'sit,' and is responsive to his handler. Even better: Chester is housetrained. CHESTER'S IDEAL HOME. Chester would thrive with someone who appreciates the loyalty and intelligence of a Shepherd but also wants a dog with a calmer, softer side. He needs no cats or small animals, and because he is dog-selective, introductions are required before living with another dog. What Chester really needs, though, is something remarkably simple: A person to belong to. After more than a year in a shelter, Chester deserves mornings that don't begin in a kennel. He deserves walks with the same person waiting at the other end of the leash. A favorite ball in his own yard. A comfortable place to sleep. Someone who knows his expressions, his routines, his quirks, and that enormous Shepherd heart. Chester has already spent far too much of his young life waiting.
