Duque is a sweet 6 year old shelter dog that was a stray in Pueblo that was transferred to a shelter in Denver. We adopted him in January. He is very protective of me and my 2 children, 8 and 10. He is reactive to other dogs and some people while on walks, barking a lot and pulling at the leash towards them. With some practice he has gotten a little better, most of the time I can get him to sit and stay. Unfortunately, this weekend while camping he bit the camp host. He had been fine when I was just talking to him, but when he grabbed a shovel to help us pull up a tent stake, Duque lunged at him and bit him on the side, thinking that he had to protect us. It was a superficial bite and Animal Control conducted an investigation, visited him and did not deem him to be dangerous. However, if he bites again, he will be considered a dangerous animal. With 2 kids in the home who have lots of visitors, I cannot safely keep him. He has not undergone formal training and I absolutely believe that if he does with someone experienced in aggressive behaviors, he will be a great dog. I am afraid to take him to a shelter as the chances of him being euthanized are high. He is a very sweet dog who has never shown any aggression towards us. He just gets very protective of us. It breaks our hearts to let him go and just want him to find a safe and happy home. Please help.
