About Garbanzo

Adoption Fee: $250
Poodle / Maltese
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Garbanzo is a 12 lb apricot Maltipoo (Maltese x Poodle) who has been with our family since he was just a few weeks old. We named him Garbanzo because he looked like a little garbanzo bean as a puppy, and almost 4 years later, he's still the same lovable little guy. We're located in downtown San Mateo and looking to rehome him this summer. I want to be upfront about this because I know it's the first question anyone reading this will have: When we got Garbanzo, we lived in a house with a yard, both my wife and I worked from home, and we only had one child. It was easy to keep up with his needs with lots of time together and plenty of time outdoors. Life has changed a lot since then. We've moved into an apartment, we now have three kids with hopes for another, and both my wife and I work in the office. It's become impossible to give Garbanzo the life he deserves. He doesn't get outside as often as he needs, and he's stressed out by how loud our young kids can be in our small apartment. He's a wonderful dog who deserves a calmer environment with more walks, more outdoor time, and the stability of a family who can really be present for him. That's what we're trying to find for him. He just turned 4 years old, DOB 05/26/2022 Under 12 lbs, apricot coat Neutered Hypoallergenic and non-shedding Fully up to date on vaccinations (complete medical records will be provided) Garbanzo is a cuddle machine. He wants to be close to his humans as much as possible - on your lap during movie nights, under your chair while you work, right next to you wherever you are. He's great with kids - even when ours have been a bit crazy during play, he has never shown any aggression, just playfulness. He loves tag and fetch. He's also lived alongside cats and other dogs without issues, he's actually very social and confident around other pets. He is also: House-trained Crate-trained Knows and responds to commands well Extremely treat-motivated (you can teach him just about anything with a few treats) Does not bite despite his incessant barking Comfortable being home alone or in the car alone without barking or chewing I want to be transparent about his quirks so there are no surprises: Garbanzo barks heavily at people he doesn't know. With his family, he never barks. But if a stranger tries to say hi to him on a walk, knocks on the door, or approaches him at the groomer, he will bark. He never tries to bite - it's all vocal, but it can be intimidating to some people, especially since it's an intense bark coming from such a small dog. Here's the pattern, and it's consistent: He barks at new people for about 1-2 minutes, and then he warms up and becomes the sweetest, friendliest dog on the planet. Once your guests sit down, he'll happily curl up at their feet or on their lap. When you come to meet him, expect a solid 2 minutes of barking before he turns into a love bug. When you have guests over, expect the same - about a minute of barking, then he's their best friend. If we have guests who don't like dogs, we'd put him in his kennel and he'd settle down within a minute. He's fine with this routine. This is how his anxiety expresses itself. If you're okay with the barking - both as his new owner and in terms of your living situation. then everything else about him is wonderful. Excitement urination: Uncommon, but in extreme moments of anxiety, he may release a few drops of urine. Worth knowing in advance. Marking: He likes to mark his territory outside. He does not mark inside the house thankfully. But expect him to want to pee on every tree outside. Leash reactivity: He can be reactive on walks sometimes. He's only 12 lbs so it's not that bad, and he responds well to leash training - just forgets it every now and then and wants to pull. I'll provide his full medical and vaccination records, plus all his bowls, crate, toys, bed, food. I want him to land softly in his new home with all his familiar things. The adoption fee is $250. This is not about making money. Maltipoos sell for at least $2,000 on the private market. The fee exists just as a filter. I want him to go to someone who genuinely understands what taking on a dog means. Bay Area preferred, but I'm open to anywhere in California. Our door stays open, always. A trial period is built in by default - if it isn't working out, for any reason, I'm one phone call away. He comes back, no hard feelings, no questions. I'd rather take him home than have him end up somewhere he doesn't belong. If you've got room in your home & heart, patience for his quirks, and a life that gets him outside more than ours can right now, please reach out. Garbanzo is one of a kind, and we're holding out for the family that's going to love him the way he deserves.
