About Gibbs

Adoption Fee: $50
Lab / German Shepherd
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Gibbs is a year and a half old mutt (around 80 lbs), probably half black lab; his mother was a mix that we were told was part German Shepherd. We got him as an 8 week old puppy. He is house broken, will walk on a leash, but not leash trained, will sit, and comes to his name. That is the extent of his training. He is friendly with cats, although he likes to playfully chew on them (which some of our cats are fine with apparently) and will probably chase them if they run. Friendly with other dogs. He cannot be trusted with chickens. The reason we have to find another home for him: we live on a ranch and he started chasing cattle. It was most likely instigated by our other dog of the same age, but he participated. We used a shock collar to train him to stay away from cows, and he had not created problems with the cows since December or January. Then one morning last week, a calf was discovered near our house, that had been chewed on by dogs. We did not see our dogs do it, but I did see them come from the direction that the calf was found. We live miles from the nearest neighbor, so other dogs are not the cause. The calf died later that day. So, we are trying to find a home that could work for him, so that he does not have to be put down. He stays in fences as far as we know (our yard fence is five strand barb wire which he goes under, but we kept him in a fenced enclosure while we were concerned about him chasing cows). He also responds well to a satellite e-fence collar, no shock necessary, he will return to the house if the collar beeps at him. He has never interacted with children, but has always been friendly and gentle (for a pup of his age) with people. No food aggression. He is not fixed yet, we were waiting until he was two years old, to promote good skeletal development, but he could be fixed now. He has had his shots, but will be due for his 2nd rabies shot this summer. We do not want him to go to a home that doesn't have a decent size yard for him to run in, as he is used to living in the country with room to run. Another dog in the home would also be a plus, since he has never lived alone. We but to ensure that he goes to a good home, in a situation where he cannot be a danger to livestock, but can also have a good quality life.
