MEET MISTY - A TENDER HEART LOOKING FOR HER PERSON: Misty is a beautiful 2-year-old German Shepherd mix with a gentle soul and an extraordinary capacity for love. She is shy and sensitive when facing the world, but once she trusts you, an entirely different Misty appears: affectionate, devoted, sweet, and happiest simply being close to her person. Misty doesn't love halfway. Once she decides you are her person, she wants to be beside you. She'll curl up next to you, follow you around the house, seek you out for affection, and happily try to convince you that her nearly 50-pound body belongs in your lap. Misty doesn't need a life filled with excitement and adventure. Her perfect life is much simpler: a peaceful home, predictable routines, a safe backyard, and someone she loves. She would be perfectly content spending an afternoon beside you while you read, watch television, work around the house, or simply relax together. To Misty, being safely beside her person is enough. IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ ABOUT MISTY'S SPECIAL HOUSING NEED: Misty is an extremely sensitive dog who can become anxious and overwhelmed outdoors, particularly when she is on leash or feels exposed. This has created an important potty-training challenge that potential adopters need to understand BEFORE considering her. Misty currently has great difficulty urinating or defecating outdoors when she is anxious. She may spend considerable time outside on leash without going potty and then relieve herself after returning indoors, where she feels safe enough to relax. Simply taking her outside more frequently or spending longer periods on leashed potty walks has not solved the problem. However, we have seen something very encouraging. When Misty has stayed at volunteers' homes where she has access to a private, securely fenced backyard, she has been able to move around freely, explore at her own pace, relax, find her spot, and successfully potty outside. For Misty, a backyard is therefore NOT simply a preference. MISTY MUST HAVE A HOUSE WITH A PRIVATE, SECURELY FENCED BACKYARD WITH FENCING AT LEAST 6 FEET HIGH. She needs a safe outdoor space where she can spend quiet, supervised time without the pressure of being on leash and gradually learn that being outdoors is safe enough for her to relax. For this reason, Misty is NOT an appropriate match at this time for an apartment, a home without its own secure backyard, or any home that must rely exclusively on leashed walks for potty breaks. Her adopter must also be prepared for indoor accidents, especially while Misty adjusts to her new home. She will need patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and time to develop confidence and a reliable outdoor potty routine. And Misty is worth that patience. THE HOME MISTY IS DREAMING OF: Misty would thrive in a calm adult household, ideally with a single adult or quiet adult couple who enjoy a peaceful lifestyle and want a deeply affectionate companion. She gets along with other dogs in social situations, but because she bonds so intensely with her humans, experience suggests that she may be happiest as the only dog in the home, where she can enjoy her person's attention without having to compete for it. She has not been tested with cats. Misty is shy, under-socialized, submissive, treat-motivated, and can be an escape risk, so doors, gates, and fencing must always be carefully secured. Busy environments and unfamiliar places can overwhelm her. She isn't looking for crowded patios, busy dog parks, or a calendar filled with outings. She's looking for something quieter. Quiet mornings together. A familiar person she can follow from room to room. A comfortable place beside you on the couch. A securely fenced backyard where she can take all the time she needs to explore, relax, and discover that the outside world doesn't always have to be frightening. And someone patient enough to watch a fearful dog slowly realize: 'I am safe here.' Misty doesn't need someone determined to turn her into a different dog. She needs someone who will love the dog she already is while gently helping her discover the dog she can become. Give Misty patience. Give her security. Give her a safe little piece of the world where she can finally relax. And give her your heart. Because once Misty gives you hers, she gives you all of it. Misty isn't looking for everybody.
