At 30 pounds, Riggs is a handsome, active boy with a playful spirit, a goofy personality, and a heart that wants nothing more than to belong. Riggs came into foster care after being removed from a difficult situation involving domestic violence. When his previous owner needed help, family stepped in to keep him out of the shelter and give him a chance to find the right forever home. Since then, he has proven that he has tremendous potential in the right environment. He is house trained, crate trained, leash trained, and knows a variety of commands including sit, lay down, roll over, up, and paws. His kennel is his safe space, and he does very well when left home alone in it. Like many smart Aussies, if left unsupervised outside his kennel, he may find his own entertainment-which sometimes includes garbage cans, zippers, buttons, and other treasures he discovers around the house. Riggs gets along well with other dogs and currently lives peacefully with cats. He has also been around free-range chickens and generally ignores them, though he may occasionally give chase. He enjoys running, playing with his Kong ball, crunching ice cubes, and greeting his favorite people with a full-body wiggle and the happiest butt wiggles you've ever seen. With people, Riggs can be cautious at first. He may bark at strangers and takes a few minutes to warm up, but once he decides you're a friend, he becomes affectionate, loyal, and eager for attention. He loves giving kisses and has a reputation for delivering extra-large ones thanks to his famously long tongue. Because of his background and his tendency to guard his kennel and food, Riggs would do best with experienced dog owners and older, respectful children who understand canine boundaries. He has lived with children throughout his life but prefers kids who are old enough to respect his space, especially around his kennel. He is not a dog who enjoys being crowded or handled when he's feeling uncertain. Riggs was involved in a bite incident after being placed in a new home. Based on the circumstances described, he became frightened, hid under a table, and reacted when a stranger reached underneath with a cane and arm to pull him out. While the bite was brief and did not involve holding on, it highlighted that Riggs needs patient introductions and owners who understand how to help a nervous dog feel safe. What Riggs really needs is consistency, structure, exercise, and someone willing to earn his trust. In return, you'll get a loyal companion with expressive puppy-dog eyes, a playful personality, and a deep desire to bond with his people. Given time and understanding, Riggs has all the ingredients to become an incredible best friend. If you're interested, please fill out an application at diggs4dogs.com.
