Winnie is a four-year-old tricolor corgi born in late October 2021 and adopted by us in mid-December 2021. She is very friendly with adults and dogs her size or a little bigger, and a little skittish around dogs that are much larger than herself. We have three cats in the house; two of them will occasionally deign to let Winnie chase them around a little and third just ignores her (cats uninterested in interacting with Winnie will hiss briefly at her and Winnie gets the message). She does not get along with children at all, despite our best efforts. We have two kids (currently eight and ten) and while Winnie is fine with both of them, they can't have friends over without someone being on dog duty. Winnie looks like a little Muppet so kids often assume she's friendly and are shocked when she snaps at them. This is the reason we don't feel we're a good household for Winnie. We've tried a variety of ways to desensitize Winnie to kids, to train her out of the aggression, but at this point we're at the end of our ropes. Winnie also has a problem with food-guarding and has bitten visitors to the house who assumed, sweet little Muppet that she is, that she would be okay with them taking a chew (or something she shouldn't be chewing) out of her mouth. She has drawn blood doing this on three separate occasions 2023-2026. We've trained Winnie to trade an inappropriate chew toy for an appropriate one plus a small treat, which has largely solved this problem (although she still finds things to bring us to try to trade for a treat). Winnie had a bladder stone in the spring of 2025 that was removed with surgery. She has a small amount of arthritis in her left rear hip which very occasionally causes her to limp slightly. She believes my ten-year-old's bedroom counts as 'outside' for toileting purposes but that is probably unique to our household. She sleeps in her crate and enjoys going for five-mile hikes in the state park. She likes belly rubs and is fine with cuddles.
