Quick background: My daughter was hiking in Arkansas and this dog attached himself to her and her friend. He was dehydrated, but groomed, neutered and sweet. In Arkansas, if you don't find the owner within 3 days, they euthanize strays. My daughter and her girlfriend tried everything they could think of to find his home, without success. My daughter brought the dog to Chicago to prevent him from being euthanized and to leave him at a shelter. It was over the July 4th weekend and by the time the weekend was over we didn't have the heart to let him go. He is basically a sweet dog, but he has become very attached to my husband who works from home. My husband has developed neuropathy in his feet and cannot feel when he is blistering or callousing. The dog can smell the problem on his feet and has become very protective. Over the past year, we have learned his 'tells' but he bit my 5-year-old granddaughter (not badly but enough to scare her and everyone else) and her parents will not allow her in our house when the dog is there. That is a huge problem now because we just helped our kids buy the house next door to us. The dog would be a great guard dog as he is extremely protective of those to whom he is attached. And maybe there is someone who could do a better job of training and controlling him. He is certainly smart enough although has a bit of independent streak about him. The dog is in perfect health and has all of his vaccinations. My husband can no longer walk him because of the neuropathy. He has always been too strong for me to walk - especially since I have never had the time to do the training.
