I'm reaching out because I'm looking for a safe and appropriate placement for my German Shepherd, Hemi. I want to be completely transparent about his history and needs so he can be matched with the right home. My priority is finding a rescue that understands the breed and can place him without the risk of euthanasia. About Hemi: Male, intact, born July 15, 2020 Healthy, no known medical issues Not currently up to date on vaccines On regular flea prevention House%BD'%BD%BDtrained and crate%BD'%BD%BDtrained (though hasn't used a crate in the last year) No separation anxiety and does not destroy property Mixed energy level - loves to run and play fetch/frisbee but settles calmly indoors Temperament with Adults: Hemi is wonderful with adults he knows and bonds strongly with his people. He is protective of the home and will bark to alert when strangers approach the property. With visitors, he can be inconsistent - sometimes completely fine, other times he displays herding behavior if he feels overstimulated or if introductions happen too quickly. Outside the home (parks, groomer, public spaces), he is much more relaxed and his territorial instincts decrease significantly. Behavior with Children: We have a young child, and this environment has become stressful for Hemi. He has never punctured skin, but he has used his mouth to 'move' or redirect my child when things get loud or chaotic. This is classic herding/protective behavior, but it's not a safe match for a home with young kids. For this reason, I'm seeking a child%BD'%BD%BDfree placement with experienced handlers. Behavior with Other Animals: Hemi has lived with another German Shepherd mix since puppyhood and they get along well aside from normal dominance moments. He is generally good with other dogs but can be occasionally dominant. He does not do well with cats and has a strong prey drive toward wildlife. Training & Lifestyle: He is intelligent, responsive, and thrives with structure and clear leadership. He has lived in both fenced and unfenced homes; he does best with a fenced yard but learned boundaries well in an unfenced environment. He may chase animals or run to greet neighbor dogs if not supervised. He would do best in a home that understands shepherd behavior, can manage overstimulation, and can provide exercise and mental engagement. Bite History (Full Transparency): Hemi has one reported bite from 3-4 years ago. A stranger in an adjacent apartment swatted at his face in a cornered situation, and he reacted defensively. There were no ongoing issues after that incident. He has excellent bite inhibition and has never caused injury. What I Can Provide: I'm able to donate his crate, bedding, toys, and food to help with his transition. Hemi is a loving, loyal, intelligent dog who simply needs a home that matches his temperament and instincts. He is not suited for a home with young children, but he will thrive with an experienced adult handler or a quiet, structured environment. Please let me know if you have space for him or if you need any additional information. I'm committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for him.
