Winnie is a 44-pound Retriever/Terrier/Pit Bull mix. Her body is slender and light like a retriever and she has a little bit more of a boxy head like the terrier and pitbull. Her coat is long-haired but sleek. She's spayed, microchipped, up to date on her vaccines, and dewormed. She is leash-pressure trained and knows her basic obedience commands, including sit, down, come, and stay. Winnie is also potty trained and has excellent home manners. She is originally from Texas. She was surrendered to a shelter at only a year and a half old because she got pregnant. She had her puppies in the shelter, and they all got adopted, but she remained there for almost a year. She was set to be euthanized when I found her online the day before it was supposed to happen. Whenever someone walked by her kennel, she would hide. The shelter staff said she was just too shy and gentle for the shelter environment and was too scared to open up to strangers there. It was also a constant-intake shelter, and when they became overcrowded - which was often, with around 90 dogs at a time - the dogs who weren't getting adopted would be euthanized. She is unbelievably sweet and has a very gentle soul. She is one of the easiest foster dogs I've ever had. I regularly foster shelter dogs, train them, and help get them adopted. I am a certified Dog Trainer and Canine Behavioral Specialist. I rarely meet a dog that I think would truly be happiest in an apartment, but in Winnie's case, I don't think she would mind it at all. Her home manners are excellent, and while she is good in a crate, I never need to use one because she does so well loose in the house. She almost never barks and loves being inside with her people. I take her on walks, hikes, and outings with other dogs. She enjoys all of those activities and does very well, but honestly, I think if I skipped a day of exercise, she would be perfectly happy laying on the couch or bed all day. She is definitely a homebody and is very laid back. Her favorite thing to do is snuggle on the bed or couch. She sleeps with me through the entire night and stays in the same spot. It's very comfortable for both of us. When we go on off lead walks on my 20 acre property, she always wants to know where I am. If she wanders off to play, she constantly checks back in with me, it's adorable. She has never let me go out of sight of her. She is also a great communicator! If she wants to go outside, come back in, or needs food, she'll come get me and try to lead me to what she wants. She's very smart! She's also the kind of dog who does not need another dog to be happy. She enjoys playing with my other foster dog every day and is very appropriate when she does, but she definitely seems more people-oriented. She values her relationship with her person more than her relationships with other dogs. It takes her a little time to warm up to new people and dogs, but she is not reactive in any way. She just gets a little hesitant and avoidant at first. Once she feels safe, she is very gentle with people and playful with other dogs. I have seen no aggressive or dominant behaviors from her. The home I hope for her is one where she can be pampered, snuggled, and treated with kindness. Somewhere peaceful, with someone who can love her as deeply as she loves them.
