Said to be dog and kid friendly with family and dog he knows and grew up with! Who can help save him? SHY AT SHELTER SO MADE RESCUE ONLY! NOW ON DEADLINE FOR 5/25 TO COMMIT OR 'May be at risk for euthanasia 5/26/26 or sooner if warranted' per shelter. THUS, HE WILL LIKELY BE EUTHANIZED 5/26 in AM. HE IS 'RESCUE ONLY' BY A 'NEW HOPE PARTNER ONLY' which means he can NOT be adopted from the shelter directly, and a New Hope partner must pull him out. Emergency/soon to be euthanized! We are in urgent need of finding a dedicated foster, ideally familiar with chows or bully breeds, or similar Asian or spitz breeds. 'BEAR' is a stunning boy weighing lbs and estimated to be only 4 years old. He was sadly surrendered by his owner along with his littermate, Pocket, who has lived in this same home for the past 4 years since they were small puppies. Both dogs are said to be chow and pit bull mixes, although interestingly, Pocket, has a dark black tongue but no other chow features, and looks nothing like Bear, who has a pink tongue, but looks more chowy. Both dogs were made Rescue only, Bear for being a bit shy of strangers essentially. While Pocket (#A5164759) has already found rescue, leaving Bear behind to be killed. Owner surrender notes state, Bear 'HAS LIVED WITH SIBLING FROM SAME LITTER FOR LAST FOUR YEARS. THEY PLAY TOGETHER BUT FED NOT TOGETHER. THIS PET WILL PULL TOWARDS AND BARK AT OTHER DOGS WHEN OUT ON WALK. THIS PET WAS OBSERVED BARKING AT/GROWLING AT ANOTHER DOG IN LOBBY.THIS PET IS FRIENDLY WITH FAMILY. SEEKS ATTENTION WITH FAMILY. HAS BEEN AROUND CHILDREN RANGING IN AGE FROM 4-10. THE YOUNGEST CHILD IN HOME DOES NOT OFTEN ENGAGE WITH THIS PET BUT PET IS PLAYFUL WITH OLDER CHILDREN IN HOME.' Like many chows, he 'GROWLS AT STRANGERS. SOURCE STATED PET NEEDS TO BE INTRODUCED TO STRANGERS AND THEN PET WILL ALLOW APPROACH.' It therefore of no surprise, he is like this at the shelter. Bear was reported to live both indoor and outdoor. 'OCCASIONALLY FREE ROAM. MOSTLY CRATED. NO DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR IN CRATED. TALL FENCING CONTAINED THIS PET.' He was potty trained when crated. There was no aggression 'OBSERVED. THIS PET SHARES WATER BOWL WITH DOG SIBLING BUT NOT FED TOGETHER.' Bear knows his 'KNOWS NAME. KNOWS SIT. KNOWS STAY. KNOWS STOP.' No reason for the surrender of both dogs is noted. Shelter notes from 5/16/2026 state, Bear 'was laying down at front of kennel; chewing on enrichment; tossed treats; ate treats; stood up; neutral; opened kennel door; presented leash; dog pulled away; ran to outer portion; tossed treats; came forward; ate treats off floor; handler was able to place leash over head; flinched; exited kennel; moderate pull. In yard, extended leash; started off exploring; urinated; defecated; tossed treats; not interested; started to pace; looking up at the top of fence; standing on hind legs in corner on yard; continued to pace; handlers tried redirecting attention by using squeaker, verbal coaxing, tossing treats; dog would continue to pace; dog explored nearby assistant handler; assistant handler reached out to pet; dog tolerated; walked away; paced; panting; assistant handler would try to approach; dog would move away; avoided handlers. Tossed toys; dog was not interested; continued to pace; panting; assistant handler approached reached out to pet; dog quickly looked back; scurried away. Handlers approached yard fence; verbally coaxed; dog looked at handlers; would not approach; handler picked up extended leash; added clip leash; exited; moderate pull; entered kennel; removed leash with clip leash.' This shelter has made many chow and chow mixes Rescue only, and already killed many who were also shy and young adults.
