Hershey is a handsome, intelligent, and deeply affectionate Mini Australian Shepherd looking for the right home to help him thrive. He absolutely loves belly rubs, cuddling, fetch, running, and being close to his person - a true 'shadow dog' who wants to be part of the family. He is very food motivated, knows several commands (sit, down, wait, okay, go get it, bring it here), and is fully housebroken. Hershey bonds very strongly with the people he trusts and is gentle and loving with children he knows well. He has lived peacefully with three smaller Mini Schnauzers and has also done well with children ages 3, 5, and teenagers ages 12-18 once familiar with them. Once comfortable, he is extremely loyal, sweet, playful, and pack-oriented. Like many herding breeds, Hershey can be anxious/reactive around unfamiliar people and dogs and does best with slow introductions, structure, exercise, and consistency. In stressful situations, he may bark, rush toward strangers, or nip defensively out of fear/anxiety. He has never caused a serious injury or broken skin. He would do best in a calm, experienced home familiar with herding breeds or reactive dogs and may thrive as the only pet or with careful introductions. This is an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision. Due to major life changes following a divorce, I am no longer able to provide the time, routine, exercise, and support Hershey deserves. I truly want him to find a stable, loving home where he can succeed and be understood for the wonderful dog he is.
