Additional Photos: https://imgur.com/a/ALy8Yo7 Ranger was born in March 2023 and is a purebred Aussie from a breeder. He is about 65 lbs. He has been neutered. He's a sweet, intelligent, and affectionate dog who loves to snuggle once he's comfortable, but can be a bit shy and cautious when meeting new people. He especially loves tug o war and chasing/being chased by people. Why we're rehoming: We also have a 5-year-old Cattle Dog/Border Collie mix. They got along well at first, but as Ranger matured, tension developed-primarily initiated by our older dog. While they coexist peacefully about 95% of the time (walking and playing together), there are occasional fights that can be unpredictable. Ranger typically tries to avoid conflict, but if he can't get away, he will defend himself, and over the past year those incidents have escalated to the point where our other dog has been injured (including one ER visit). He has never been the one to initiate the fight as it's usually our other dog getting tense right in his face or resource guarding us. We've tried multiple interventions (separation with gates, vet-prescribed Prozac for both dogs), but the underlying tension remains. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to afford a professional behaviorist, although we would genuinely be open to any training advice if someone has experience with resolving situations like this and somehow getting them to fully trust each other. That said, given the pattern and escalation, we ultimately feel both dogs may live happier, more relaxed, and more fulfilling lives in separate homes rather than continuing to manage and monitor them so closely. About Ranger: 'ۢ Typical Aussie energy; benefits from exercise ~2x/day but not 'extreme' energy 'ۢ Very affectionate and loves to cuddle once bonded 'ۢ House-trained; has never been destructive 'ۢ Knows basic commands (sit, lay down, shake) and is a quick learner 'ۢ Can pull on leash but has improved with Sprenger pinch collar. 'ۢ Enjoys being outside, watching/chasing squirrels 'ۢ Can be reactive (barking) to dogs behind fences 'ۢ Has a sensitive stomach (currently on sensitive formula food) Important considerations: 'ۢ Must be the only dog in the home 'ۢ Because of his history with dog fights, we recommend a home without children (out of caution), but he has never bit a human except soft mouthing during rough play, so older kids who know how to behave around dogs would probably be fine I would think. 'ۢ Best fit would be an active owner with time, patience, and a yard. 'ۢ Currently on Prozac due to the household situation, but we believe he may not need it long-term in a better environment. 'ۢ Not a fan of the vet but Trazadone/Gabapentin has helped in the past. Fear free vet would be ideal. However he needs to get off the Prozac before using Trazadone as he has had a reaction with both those drugs combined in the past. 'ۢ Hasn't been to a groomer as we bathe and brush him at home. Doesn't allow us to easily clip his nails but they stay trimmed from exercise and we are able to clip his rear dewclaws (that curl inwards) while we bathe him. Ranger truly is a loving, loyal dog who deserves a home where he can relax and get the attention he thrives on. This decision has been heartbreaking for us, but we want what's best for him and our other dog. We're located in Austin, TX, but we're willing to drive a few hours for the right home. If you or someone you trust might be a good fit, please reach out. We're happy to answer any questions.
