X URGENT- RARE, YOUNG CHOW/FRENCHIE X - ALAMEDA, CA (NOR CAL) - ID #A053099 'HUNCHO' - FRIENDS OF THE ALAMEDA ANIMAL SHELTER -IN URGENT NEED OF CHOW SAVVY HOME OR FOSTER AND RESCUE OR HE WILL BE EUTHANIZED SOON We are in urgent need of finding a savvy forever home or foster and rescue for this adorable, but somewhat shy boy who was surrendered by an owner who loves him, but has a baby in the home. Found originally as a stray at a farm, the owner adopted Huncho as a 6 month puppy after seeing his post. DNA results showed he is approximately 69% chow and 31% French bulldog. Huncho is now 2 years old, weighs 53 lbs and would do best in a home, ideally with no children, given his needs. Unfortunately, Huncho can be nervous around certain people and protective of his family, and bit a male visitor recently who tried to shoo Huncho away after he jumping up on the bed near the baby. While this bite did not result in stitches, and he has also been nippy with others at times when not comfortable and a savvy, adult only home familiar with protective or more sensitive chows like this would be ideal. Unfortunately, the single mom was not in a position to seek training. However, the owner told us, 'He is very calm and sweet with grown ups but prefers someone with a firm hand. He did super well at my friends for a little bit as my friend has boundaries for him. He is good with me as well and so sweet and gentle. He even is very soft with getting food from my hand and will let him brush his teeth and go in his mouth to grab things he's not supposed to eat. He's so sweet and very food motivated. He loves watching tv with me and was gentle with my baby. He did like to nibble on my baby which concerns me as to how safe he is with kids.' She also explained he also does not like male dogs, and prefers women to men. 'He has been nippy in the past with guests but has never made contact and attacked a person before. This more aggressive behavior happened after my baby. He has never been aggressive with me and has always been so gentle with me. But after the baby he attacked my friend and attempted to bite his dog walker.' At the shelter, staff said 'he is the kind of dog who will bond with certain people more than others regardless of gender. I think it is more related to who is interacting with him the most. He's very aloof and does not usually choose to interact much on his own with other people. He likes to do activities on his own but will come over for a little to do check ins. He likes squeaky toys and will play fetch but mostly he will just chew on the toy by himself. He likes to chase and be chased for play. He tends to tire out quickly and will sit or lay down and anchor when that happens. He seems housebroken and will whine when he needs to go to the bathroom. He will pull on walks. If he sees a squirrel, he will fixate, pull towards, and whine, but he does not do this when he sees birds or other dogs. He takes a bit of time to warm up with new people but afterwards he is very sweet. He can get excited easily and he will jump up on you when this happens but is easily corrected with a turn and a verbal 'off'. He has been getting a lot more confident as of lately, so his personality is really coming out! He would be best suited in a Chow savvy home or with someone who is dedicated to learning about the breed.' They provided us several videos interacting with staff and new people where he did okay, but needs a slow approach. The shelter also told us, 'He has been doing better, but we had him in the office (which was a mistake- it was overstimulating and too many new people). Someone he hasn't interacted with much attempted to clip his leash to his collar, he growled and jumped up on her, and bit at her side. He did not break skin but he did bruise her. In all fairness we should not have brought him up to the office, but I think our care manager was feeling hopeful since he's been doing better with new people in our play yard. He did have a training session last week with one of our training partners and did well. But advised we go slow. For now while he is with us he is unavailable. If we can get him to generalize a bit more and think he is ready we would definitely want him going with an experienced owner.' Therefore, currently, Huncho is still 'Rescue only', but the shelter may consider a chow savvy home, subject to approval and improvement. 'Rescue only' means a dog cannot be adopted from the shelter currently, and must be pulled by a rescue group only, yet most rescues need fosters (or foster to adopt) and a place for a dog to go. Therefore, if you can possibly help to foster Huncho or may be interested in adopting him, please contact [email protected] asap or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to assist with find Video found on: https://www.facebook.com/783968124/posts/10169014738378125/?mibextid=wwXIfr
