Subject: Deuce's Story - A Sweet Boy Still Waiting for His Real Chance I wanted to share Deuce's story as well, because he truly deserves to finally find the stable and loving home he has never really had. Deuce originally came into West Valley Animal Shelter around September 2025 with his brother, Deebo (now Scooby). From what volunteers understood, the brothers had likely been used for breeding and were reportedly being advertised on Craigslist before being surrendered. The shelter was told the dogs had been fighting, yet neither dog showed injuries or signs consistent with fighting. Both participated in playgroups and were doing well. They quickly became volunteer favorites because of how sweet, affectionate, and loving they were with people. As often happens in overcrowded shelters, both dogs were placed on the euthanasia list after only a short time despite being good dogs. Deuce was eventually pulled from the shelter by an older woman named Carol after someone falsely claimed they would come pick him up 'in a few days.' Unfortunately, it turned out this individual had allegedly done the same thing with multiple dogs through social media. Carol stepped in to help temporarily, and because she cared about him so much, she continued pseudo-fostering him to keep him safe. Since October of last year, Deuce has remained in that situation. Carol is kind-hearted and genuinely loves him, but due to his size and strength, she is limited in what she can physically manage. As a result, Deuce spends most of his time living in a backyard kennel area. We are told he occasionally goes to daycare, although we are not fully sure of the details. One beautiful thing is that every Sunday, a lovely lady Natalia takes him out for a few hours to Orcutt Ranch and adoption events so he can experience the world outside of confinement, get affection, and simply be a dog for a little while. And despite everything, Deuce remains an incredibly sweet and loving boy. He is strong, but gentle. He absolutely loves affection, hugs, and kisses. Once he warms up, he walks nicely on leash and enjoys being close to his people. At the shelter, volunteers spent a great deal of time working with both brothers, and Deuce had learned several commands and structure routines. Unfortunately, because of his current living situation, much of that consistency has been difficult to maintain. The biggest thing Deuce needs now is not perfection - it is stability, guidance, structure, exercise, and someone willing to truly invest in him. He has spent so much of his life surviving uncertainty, yet he continues to show love and trust toward people. He deserves more than a kennel and occasional outings. He deserves a real home, real leadership, and a real chance to finally decompress and thrive. Thank you for taking the time to read his story and care about these dogs.
