About Charlie

Adoption Fee: $100
Australian Cattle Dog / Rottweiler
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Charlie is a sweet, smart 1-year-old dog who was abandoned last November near our rural ranch. We took him in as a favor to a neighbor, intending to foster him until we could find a home for him (we already have 2 dogs of our own). We've had him neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, snake trained, and DNA tested. He is 50% cattle dog and 50% Rottweiler and has no significant genetic disease risk. He is absolutely charming -- loves most people once he gets to know them (after about 5 minutes). Charlie is young and thus has a fair amount of energy but not excessive. He absolutely loves carrying around his squeaky toys and rarely destroys them. He loves car rides. He loves walks/runs. He also loves playing with other dogs his size but his play can get rough at times. Charlie enjoys going out the doggie door (which he was very quick to learn) into our large fenced yard where he chases lizards, birds, ground squirrels, etc. Charlie would do well in an active home, but any home with loving people who provide food, some exercise, and affection would probably be fine. He should not be with cats, other dogs (esp. if smaller), or anyone vulnerable. We do not have children at home, so he is untested with kids. Older kids would probably be okay. Charlie is house trained with a doggie door. He knows 'sit' and 'wait' and walks fairly well on a leash. He is not crate trained. He currently has people around him most of the time, but he seems to do okay when left alone (no separation anxiety, not destructive). Off leash recall is fairly good, but he hasn't been tested under challenging circumstances. I would recommend a great deal of caution off leash if there is a chance that an unfamiliar person or animal is around. Charlie is protective of his people and his property. He is a very good watch dog, but with that comes risk to unfamiliar people or dogs entering his space. Once he understands that a person is a 'friend' he is as sweet as can be. From the beginning, we never intended to keep Charlie long-term. But recently, Charlie attacked our small timid male Vizsla, resulting in significant bite injuries. This was a single incident over 4 months, but now we must keep the dogs separated and our need to rehome Charlie has become more urgent. Despite all this, we love Charlie and are trying our best not to send him to a shelter. I really cannot overstate what a handsome and sweet dog he is (with a few caveats), and I think a shelter would just be awful for him. He could be the perfect dog for the right person/family/situation.
