Cassie is a sweet 14 year old Australian Shepard mix. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. She is intelligent, well trained, knows many tricks including scent games (she can sniff out/find specific objects). At 14 years old, she just really started to slow down in the last 1-2 years. She previously had tons of energy but now prefers to mosy around and sleep a good portion of the day. She does enjoy 1-2 good walks per day and 15-20 minutes of focused attention at other points. She loves being around people and doesn't like to be sequestered away from others, though she is fine with you leaving the house. She used to do well with other dogs, however after living in a house for a year with an aggressive dog, she now is only OK with select dogs. Her dog aggression is fear based on only if the dog gets close. She can easily go on a walk past many dogs and she does not even bat an eyelash at them. For that reason though, she hasn't interacted/lived closely with other dogs very much in the last few years. It pains me to make this post as she has been an amazing dog and companion all these years. I now have a young daughter who doesn't understand or respect Cassie's space. My daughter loves jumping all over Cassie, and unfortunately with Cassie's age and arthritis, Cassie has snapped at my daughter several times. Although Cassie has never seriously injured my daughter, it is not a safe or enjoyable situation for either of them. These snaps have been meant to just tell my daughter to go away, and weren't intended to actually hurt her. However with my daughter being so small, it's still a risk (my daughter has only ever been left with a scratch). Everyone who has ever watched Cassie while we are away falls in love with her. She is chill and sweet and easy. She truly is an amazing dog. I suspect Cassie has between 1-3 years left of life. Her main issue is her arthritis in her hips/back legs. She would do great with an older individual looking for a companion and a walking buddy. Ideally I would want her to go to someone who would periodically send me updates and would let me visit with her from time to time.
