MADE RESCUE ONLY! NOW ON 5/4 DEADLINE FOR TO COMMIT OR 'May be at risk for euthanasia 5/5 or sooner if warranted' per shelter. THUS, HE WILL LIKELY BE EUTHANIZED 5/5 in AM. HE IS 'RESCUE ONLY' BY A 'NEW HOPE PARTNER ONLY' which means he can NOT be adopted from the shelter directly, and a New Hope partner must pull him out. Emergency/soon to be euthanized! We are in urgent need of finding a chow savvy foster, or at least a foster familiar with chows or similar Asian or spitz breeds. 'KONBINI' is a handsome cream male chow weighing only 38 lbs and estimated to be only 2 years old. He was found as a stray by a family who took him in for month and said, he was 'FRIENDLY WITH SOURCE AND FAMILY. PET APPROACHED FAMILY FOR ATTENTION. PUTS PAW ON PEOPLE WHO ARE SEATED FOR ATTENTION. NOT AROUND ANY CHILDREN WHILE WITH SOURCE. GROWLS OVER FOOD BOWL SOMETIMES.' At the shelter, he can be seen in videos taking treats gently through the kennel fence. However, the shelter noted on 4/29, 'Canine has shown over-arousal and is difficult to manage safely while in care'. Konbini was then made Rescue Only and put on a short deadline of 5/4 to commit. Additional shelter notes from 4/26/2026 state, 'On approach, dog was at front of kennel, wiggly body and wagging tail. Easy to leash. Walked with moderate pull, no reaction to passing dogs. In play yard, dog had soft body language, wagging tail, and sought attention from handlers. Stayed close, leaning in, allowing all petting. Dog would occasionally begin deeply sniffing both handlers' shoes and legs, pressing snout firmly against them. Handlers would remain still, then verbally coax dog away. Dog would lose interest and continue to allow petting. After approximately 5 minutes in yard, dog began sniffing second handler, then jumped up and mounted leg, gripping leg tightly with front paws. First handler picked up leash, applied light pressure and called dog away. Dog resisted for a moment, then jumped down. Dog resumed wagging tail. Dog would look down towards handler's feet, then jerk head forward as if to nip-- handler guided dog away with light leash pressure. Handler was able to apply clip lead without issue. On return, dog had light pull, briefly stopped and pulled back, nipped at leash. Handler verbally coaxed dog, dog continued walking. At door to kennel wing, dog stopped, pulled back, began nipping towards leash again. Handler was able to step into building and apply light leash pressure to guide dog in. Dog turned head towards handler with open mouth; handler kept leash short to keep distance from dog as precaution. Able to guide dog into kennel without issue; removed leash via clip lead.' Further notes and medical details may be found on this link: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/pri.../Details/OTI5-NDE1-MDZB which show some over arousal. Konbini needs to be neutered which would be scheduled by a rescue group. We are urgently looking for ideally a foster or foster to adopt for Konbini, and chow, Asian and or spitz breed experience recommended. This shelter has made many chow and chow mixes Rescue only, and already killed many who were also shy and young adults. Please do not let this young boy meet the same awful fate. If you may be interested in fostering, fostering to adopt, or helping in some other way (ie., pledging for his rescue), please email: [email protected] asap at Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, AND also fill out a foster application on https://dogfoster.org/ and https://azfosters.com/ so all entities can work on pairing a foster to a rescue group to help. Rescues can assist with neuter and medical. Rescue groups may contact the shelter directly at [email protected] and by calling 602-506-7387 and providing the ID.
