Bernie is an almost 2-year-old mixed breed (primarily Catahoula Leopard Dog, with Rhodesian Ridgeback, Golden Retriever, and Pit). He weighs 60lbs. We adopted him at 3 months old from a rescue group based in NYC, though he originally came from Georgia. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, crate & potty trained, and has received extensive training throughout his life. Bernie is an active dog who loves playing tug, being outside, and even accompanying us on bike rides! This is a heartbreaking decision for us, but we are expecting a newborn baby in July and have come to the conclusion that we are unable to safely manage some of Bernie's behavioral challenges in our home. Our primary concern is his reactivity when people enter the house. He becomes over-aroused: jumping on guests, barking, and occasionally mouthing hands. While he has never bitten or injured anyone and is not aggressive, he requires slow, structured introductions and consistent management. We have been working with a professional trainer for several months, and their assessment is that Bernie is not dangerous and can thrive with the right structure, exercise, and experienced handling. He is very intelligent (loves to train), knows all basic commands, walks structured on leash, and is off-leash/e-collar trained. However, he is dog-selective (males) and would do best in a home without other dogs. Our goal is to find Bernie a home or foster environment that can support him through a transition period and continue working with him to build confidence and manage his stress when people enter the home. He has so much potential in the right setting, and we want to ensure he is placed in a home where he can succeed.
