Rio is a 5 year old fully vaccinated and spayed Australian Shepherd. She is house, kennel and leash trained. Rio has good recall and is very easy to train. She has brought so much joy into our lives but unfortunately we feel we are not the right family for her. Rio is a very friendly and sweet girl who loves to run and be outdoors. Although she is 90% the perfect dog, the other 10% can be aggressive. I want to be very transparent and open because we want her to go to the right home. Rio can have aggressive behavior with a few different triggers, the main one being when we or anyone tries to leave the house. Whenever anyone starts to show signs of leaving/tries to open the door and leave her behind, she becomes aggressive and has bitten us. Her bites have not caused bleeding but did break the skin and leave scratches during these moments. Just recently, she unfortunately bit a kid trying to leave. This event was the catalyst for our decision. We have a 10 month baby and while she is very sweet and gentle with him, we fear one day she will attack him when he inevitably wants to go in and out of the house. With all that being said, we do believe that in the right home she will flourish! The ideal home for Rio would be either someone single/with no kids that lives a very active lifestyle, someone with prior experience with her breed or a similar one, and/or someone with lots of land/farm that she can work/wander on. She is truly her happiest when she is outside. Rio is very friendly with other dogs. She has never lived with another animal, but we have dog sat multiple times and the only thing to be concerned with is she gets protective of her food. Other than that she loved to cuddle/play with them while they stayed with us. As previously mentioned, I would not feel comfortable rehoming her to a family with kids because I would hate to have another biting situation happen. I could go on forever about our sweet Rio girl and I know she'll bring a new home/family so much joy!!
