SAN FRANCISCO, CA IN N CAL- GORGEOUS PUREBRED CHOW 'CHUNKY', a 5 yr old BOY WHO DOES WELL W WITH OTHER DOGS IN PLAYGROUP, GOOD W PEOPLE AND KIDS HE KNOWS, NEEDS NEW CHOW SAVVY HOME DUE TO OWNER CIRCUMSTANCES/MOVE Please no negative comments as the focus has to be on finding placement, and we are Not the owner. Please help us find a loving, chow savvy home this handsome hunk who was adopted at 8 weeks old, and has been in the same home ever since. Unfortunately, due to a pending move next month, and his owner unable to take him, they reached out to us for help as we do not want him to end up at a shelter. Chunky is now 5, and up to date on shots, appears healthy, and enjoys his doggy playgroups he attends with other chows where he is noted as playful. He has lived mostly indoors and is potty trained. The owner also let us know he has done well around children ages 2-10 he knows and are respectful, and describes him as 'Playful and a lot of energy. Gentle with children.' However, like many chows, he can take a while to warm up and seems protective of his home. The owner clarified, he 'will usually follow you around and get to know you first. When he's unsure, he mostly barks or keeps his distance until he feels more comfortable. He hasn't air-snapped at people. I haven't seen him try to lunge or snap he just seems cautious at first.' We would only recommend homes and children who are familiar with the breed and know to be respectful and give a chow space. We have many nice videos (PASTED INTO THE COMMENTS SECTION OF HIS FACEBOOK POST) of Chunky showing him be loving with a younger child he knows, as well as interacting with other dogs in playgroup and at a doggy park. We are told he does not like cats, unfortunately. While he has been dog friendly, he has not lived with any other dogs. Therefore, if you have another dog, a meet and greet would be recommended. Chunky is walked 'about 2 times per day, usually for 20-30 minutes and he does well with that level of exercise.' The owner also told us he does not like to go to the groomer or vet, and has taken trazadone and or gabapentin beforehand. He may also have a little separation anxiety to be aware of. She will therefore 'give him treats/food and he usually doesn't follow, may whine briefly, settle down quickly, or show signs of separation anxiety like barking or pacing.' The owner further added Chucky has no medical issues she is aware of, and no reported bites. He will need to neutered as a condition of his adoption, and we are looking into affordable options. The owner has offered to contribute towards some of this if the right home is found. If you are breed savvy or knowledgeable and are interested in meeting and adopting Chunky, please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to assist with his placement. All adopters will be asked for a home check (which may be virtual), an application, a vet reference, proof of any prior pets or chows, and a signed adoption contract agreeing to neuter him. Please note adoptions typically need to be done in person. However, a further away home who can arrange their own transport may be considered if the home is qualified and risk free.
