About Lychee

Yorkie / Schnauzer
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Lychee !! He is one of the now 23 dogs we've taken in from a horrible hoarding situation. He survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water and no electricity for a very long time. The dogs there all had to fight over very little food and resources. He's still very scared but he's getting there! Lychee is approx 3 years old. He is a male Yorkie mix best guess. He weighs approx 20 Pounds and is full grown. He is already neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. He is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. This guy was the last in the house to be caught and he arrived to us extremely shut down. He's still extremely shy and will hide a lot. He's very slowly coming out of his shell. He still has a lot of fear to work through and needs help building his confidence. Even though he is terrified at times he never tries to bite. He just tries to get away. He has done really well with other dogs of all sizes. He is not yet interested in doing much with other dogs but is fine around them. He is fostered with cats and does good around them. He ignores the cats and doesn't seem to have any interest in them at all. He has not been fostered with kids. He is not a mean or aggressive dog so we think he could do well with older kids that can give him space to get used to them first. Lychee is working on his training but he still needs a lot of help with it. He has done good on car rides and does not get sick. He had clearly never been on a leash before and is still very terrified of it. He will learn with time and practice but is not there yet. He is crate trained and does well in the crate. He will still potty in there but isn't vocal at all or upset about being in there. He is not potty trained. He came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going anywhere else. He is still scared of outside and with his leash fears it's taking more time. He has to be leashed even in a fenced area until he's comfortable with you or he will run from you and hide. He is starting to learn to use potty pads but is not perfect with it yet. Lychee was in a situation where he had to fight over limited food and resources from the other dogs in the home. We suggest allowing him to eat separately where he can take his time and not feel threatened or pressured. He has no issues at all sharing with people but may be uncomfortable sharing around other dogs. So far he's not shown any issues with other dogs around food. He has a low energy level so far. He pretty much finds a spot and stays there. He doesn't play or do a whole lot at the moment. He is slowly starting to show an interest in exploring his surroundings. We expect he may get a little more energetic once he fully decompresses. Overall Lychee is a scruffy and adorable little guy. He really has so much potential. These dogs from this situation have shown us that with time they will break through the fear and start to trust again. So many have been adopted and are now thriving. If you are willing to help him work through his remaining training needs, you will get one amazing little guy. ***Do not apply to adopt one of these hoarding case dogs if you're not serious about giving them time to adjust. It's absolutely unfair to expect them to adjust in a day or two. We've already had 3 of them adopted and returned within 24 hours of adoption for not being immediately settled and perfect in a completely new place. All returned for things we explained upfront about them. It's completely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect that from dogs that have been through what they have. The last thing they need is to be shuffled around due to adopters not listening or being serious about their needs*** Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA.
