Hello, This is Barley, a cattle dog that showed up at our home. He appeared well cared for and very intelligent, but despite searching locally and online, we were unable to locate an owner. With assistance from Texas Cattle Dog Rescue, he was neutered in January and had a few damaged dewclaws removed. He has fully healed and is up to date on his care. He is a high-energy, intelligent dog who bonds strongly to his people. He kennels well and responds to correction. He does have typical cattle dog traits - he can be territorial and is a heavy chewer. While he does well with our children (ages 6-11), he has shown some protectiveness and tension when unfamiliar young children come into our home. Because we frequently have kids over and have a busy sports schedule, we feel he would thrive in a quieter, more structured environment. He appears to do well with other dogs. I'm unsure how he would do in a home with cats. Given his energy level and instincts, I believe he would make an excellent working or very active companion dog. We've kept and cared for him as long as we responsibly can, but we are now seeking placement as soon as possible to ensure everyone's safety and his success.
