Looking for the right home for our very special boy This is incredibly hard for us to write, but we're looking to rehome our 4-year-old male cattle dog to the right home - one that truly understands him and can give him the life he deserves. He came to us as a stray through a shelter, and he has been nothing but loyal, loving, and full of personality ever since. He's the kind of dog who wants to be involved in everything you do - he follows us from room to room, watches closely while we cook, and always seems to be asking, 'What's next?' When he gets excited, he does this little jump-dance that never fails to make us smile. He absolutely loves people and is very affectionate. When meeting new people, he can get so excited that he piddles a little - it's just his way of expressing how happy he is. He's incredibly sweet, smart, and eager to learn, and he already knows basic commands. With the right person, he has so much potential to keep growing. He has a lot of energy and would do best in an active home that can give him structure, enrichment, and ideally some kind of 'job.' When he does settle, he enjoys being close and getting pets (though he can be a bit sensitive around his stomach and hips due to skin irritation). He does have allergies that cause itching, but we manage it with oatmeal baths and allergy chews, which help. We want to be very honest to make sure he finds the right fit: 'ۢ He cannot live with cats or small animals. He has a strong prey drive, and while it is not malicious, it is instinctual and unsafe. This is the primary reason we are making the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. 'ۢ He does well with medium to large dogs. 'ۢ He would do best in a calm, adult home or one experienced with similar dogs. 'ۢ He can be a bit reactive if he feels startled or grabbed too quickly - he communicates clearly and will remove himself when uncomfortable. He has never bitten or injured a person. 'ۢ He is extremely food motivated and very enthusiastic at mealtimes, likely due to his past as a stray. However, he is not food aggressive - we can handle his food, be near him, or share space without issue. 'ۢ He loves toys, especially tough 'super chewer' ones. Soft toys don't last long, but he truly enjoys them while they do. 'ۢ He is kennel trained and sleeps in his crate. 'ۢ He can be destructive if left unattended with things like trash, food, blankets, or dog beds - he prefers durable, comfortable surfaces like a couch. Right now, he spends more time outside than we'd like in order to safely separate him from our cats, which isn't the life we want for him. Why we're rehoming We love him deeply, and this has been an incredibly difficult decision. After an incident where he attacked one of our cats, we had to face the reality that this is not something we can safely manage long-term. It's not fair to him or to our other animals to continue in this situation. Our priority is finding him a home where he can thrive - where he doesn't have to be separated, managed, or restricted in ways that limit his quality of life. The kind of home we're looking for An experienced owner who understands driven, high-energy dogs and is willing to continue training and providing structure. Someone active, patient, and committed - who will give him the attention, enrichment, and purpose he craves. He is an incredibly loyal and loving dog, and in the right environment, he will make an amazing companion. We are not in a rush and will be very selective. He will only go to a home where we feel confident he will be safe, happy, and loved. If you think you might be the right fit, we would love to talk more.
