Luigo is a 'Sato' dog who was rescued from Puerto Rico. Satos are a resilient, intelligent, mixed-breed street dog commonly found across the island. Known as 'Puerto Rican Village Dogs,' they are not a purebred breed, but rather a genetically diverse mix adapted to tropical life. Satos tend to have a blend of terrier and shepherd traits. You can watch a video of Luigo's rescue in Puerto Rico here: https://youtube.com/shorts/uT4qlY7lLQw?si=JQfu2WwKaAL7oyG2 Best Guess for Age: 11 months as of April 2026 Estimated Weight (he is still growing): 45 pounds as of 3/1/26; he has been stable at this weight for two months now. What My Foster Says About Me: Luigo (Wee-Gee, is what we call him) is a sweetie who is full of energy and affection. He likes his crate and is improving every day on the leash. He knows sit, stay and stop, and is making progress on 'leave it/drop it.' He loves the dog park and gets along great with his fellow pups. He just wants to play and run. Wee-Gee has done great meeting all humans, including kids, but he's shy at first. Once he gets to know you - which won't take long - he's a snuggler, curling up on your lap or with a dog buddy at night. If you're a runner, you'll have an eager companion. Finally, Wee-Gee's facial expressions and posture give off a royalty vibe that are hilarious and adorable. Luigo gets along well with other dogs and has lived with kids in his foster home! We haven't seen him with cats but are happy to discuss integration techniques with potential adopters. Currently Living at a DC area foster home. Special Adoption Considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. Because Luigo is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog to show him the ropes. Luigo is looking for: My forever family! I can't wait to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. But most of all I want to know I'm safe and loved, where I belong. I have so many kisses and so much love and loyalty to give in return. What do you say? Do get to go home with you? ADOPTION FEE: $460, includes the cost of vet bills and transport from the shelter.
