Maya is a 6-year-old German Shepherd located in Cedar City, Utah, and she is a loyal, intelligent, and deeply devoted dog who has been loved her entire life. Weighing just over 58 pounds, Maya is currently in professional training with Quichapa Kennels, where she is learning structure, boundaries, and continued obedience to help set her up for long-term success in the right home. Maya is affectionate, playful, and full of personality with her people. She loves belly rubs, tug-of-war, treats (she will do just about anything for them), and has a silly, fun side that shines once she's comfortable. She knows multiple commands-including sit, gentle, wait, go inside, and bedtime routines-and even understands commands in Spanish. She is crate trained, leash trained, and responds well when given consistency and guidance. She does well with adults and is comfortable with both men and women. While she can be alert and bark at strangers from a distance, she settles once they are properly introduced. She has done well with trainers and veterinary staff, showing she can build trust with new people when given the opportunity. Maya is a protective dog by nature and does have specific needs when it comes to other animals. She is not a fit for homes with cats or small dogs, and would do best as the only pet or potentially with a well-matched, larger dog under experienced supervision. She has shown resource guarding tendencies around other animals and has had incidents with a cat and a small dog when boundaries were crossed. Because of this, she needs a structured, dog-savvy home that understands how to manage space and interactions. She has a high energy level and is used to living outdoors with yard space, so she will need room to move and an owner committed to giving her continued exercise, training, and engagement. Fireworks and loud noises can make her nervous, so she benefits from a calm, steady environment during those times. Maya's situation is not due to a lack of love-her family is facing life changes that make it impossible to give her the space, time, and stability she needs. She is a good dog who simply needs the right environment and leadership to thrive. With continued structure and the right person, Maya will be an incredibly loyal, fun, and rewarding companion.
