Heartworm negative, neutered, and due for surgery on his mild entropion eye condition on April 6th. Arthur arrived to she shelter with severe hairless and itchy, yeasty skin. He has been getting special baths for 3 weeks now and is feeling much better! 100% housetrained - no accidents or marking. He will let you know when he needs to go out. Initially did great on the leash but is starting to get stressed in busy uptown with some sketchy characters constantly around. Would love a quieter neighborhood with access to a backyard to lounge in. When you come back inside, he patiently waits for you to take his leash off. Not a picky eater - he happily eats dry food and takes his medication easily when given with peanut butter. Cat friendly! He was swatted by the resident cat and didn't react at all - he just looked a little sad that the cat didn't want to be friends. Arthur came to the shelter with his sister Joy and seems to really enjoy canine companionship. He would do very well in a home with another dog. He recently had a meet and greet with a female Bernese mountain dog and did wonderfully! Greeted her nicely and kindly sniffed her. He spent a few days in foster with three other dogs and was relaxed and comfortable having them around. During the day, he prefers lounging on the couch and makes a great work-from-home buddy. He has settled into a great bedtime routine. He knows to go right to his dog bed at bedtime. He will whine for a bit sometimes, but settles down with pets. In the mornings, he will usually sleep in and patiently wait for you to wake up and take him outside. He does not enjoy having to go in an elevator to get outside, he has no patience waiting for the elevator to come to the top floor. He no longer barks or cries when left alone. He picked up on my routine quickly and now just relaxes on the couch until I return. He has been left alone for up to 7 hours uncrated with no accidents and no destructive behavior, doesn't need to be crated. He goes up stairs easily, but can be a little clumsy coming back down. He will jump into the car on his own, but needs a small boost (I have an SUV). Once he's in, he rides very nicely. He doesn't know formal commands, but he is naturally very well behaved and easygoing. He is very treat motivated! I learned that Arthur doesn't like the rain and will not get out of the car if it's raining outside. He likes to stay comfy and dry! Overall: Arthur is such a sweet, easy dog to have around. It took him a few days to fully settle in, but once he did he quickly learned my routine. I believe he may have some Husky in him because of some of the funny noises he makes when he needs to tell you something and doesn't like when you're taking too long to go out the door! He has been getting medicated baths and he loves his bath time! I choose too bring him to a groomer who specializes in skin issues and she has him looking, smelling, and feeling a million times better than when he first arrived, and it's only going to keep improving. He is still itchy, so the weekly baths will continue to help him heal and feel more comfortable. He does not have mange - it seems that he just has not been properly taken care of and has yeasty skin due to neglect. Arthur is also great with handling. He lets me wipe his eyes and clean his paws after walks without any issues. He just lays there calmly and trusts you. Arthur will sometimes whine at bedtime, and I think some of it may be due to his itchy skin and he's uncomfortable. He has been doing this less and less, but he does appreciate getting 'tucked in' and receiving some pets for a few minutes in his dog bed before you get into bed for the night. Arthur was originally really great on the leash and wanted to greet other dogs and people, however because he had a bad case of kennel cough for over 2 weeks I did not let him interact. He is now starting to be more vocal on the leash so he may be frustrated that he hasn't been able to say hello. He will also bark at people who look a little sketchy, especially in Uptown Charlotte with people wearing lots of baggy clothes with hoods. I think part of it may be that he's alerting me. He loves people though and loves greeting people who they come into the elevator. I think he needs to get out of the crazy city environment and into a quieter neighborhood with a yard where he can leisurely hang out. Having another dog in the home to help him adjust would be perfect, as I think he misses his sister. After what seems like a lifetime of neglect, Arthur is finally getting the care he deserves. The hardest part is over - he finally got over his kennel cough, he got neutered, and he no longer stinks and his skin is improving every week. He is now ready for his forever family after all his hard work! He is ready to finally know what a real home looks like, preferably with a doggy sibling he can hang out with.
