Meet Poppy Poppy is a 14 month old Golden Retriever who looks like someone accidentally put the 'shrink' setting on a full sized Golden. At just 40 pounds, she is a petite version of the breed, but she still carries all the warmth, affection, and goofy charm that makes Goldens so beloved. Poppy was originally purchased from a breeder in Washington, Iowa and later came into rescue as an owner surrender. Since arriving, she has been settling into foster life and showing us what a sweet and devoted little dog she is. Poppy does have a neurological disorder that causes some behavioral dysregulation. The good news is that it is very well managed with medication. She takes Gabapentin and Phenobarbital, which together cost about $30 per month. When she is on her medication, Poppy is a normal, happy dog who enjoys life just like any other young Golden. Without her medication she can become reactive or snappy with people or other dogs, so staying consistent with her meds will be important for her lifelong success. Poppy is currently living with a foster mom who is a professional dog trainer, and this girl has clearly been paying attention in class. She already knows an impressive list of commands including sit, down, off, sit pretty, shake, spin, place, heel, leave it, and 'here' as her recall word. She is also house trained and crate trained, making her an easy addition to the right home. In her foster home, Poppy lives with another dog and does well, but her ideal home would be a quieter environment without small children. She would be perfectly happy as an only dog where she can soak up all the attention from her people. Attention is exactly what Poppy loves most. She is very people focused and happiest when she can be close to her humans. If you sit down, she will likely appear beside you ready for cuddles. If you are moving around the house, she will happily supervise your activities. Poppy also loves to play with toys, and squeaky toys are her absolute favorite. If there is a squeak involved, you can bet Poppy will be right there ready for a game. Because she is still a young and playful dog, Poppy does require a physically fenced yard where she can safely run, stretch her legs, and enjoy playtime. Poppy is a special girl looking for a home that understands her needs and will keep her on the routine that helps her thrive. In return, she will offer loyalty, affection, and plenty of Golden Retriever sweetness packed into her perfectly petite frame. If you are looking for a devoted companion who wants nothing more than to be near her people, Poppy may be the girl for you.
