Our Belgian Malinois is an incredibly intelligent, loyal dog with a very high energy level and strong working drive. He is extremely smart and eager to learn, and with the right training and structure he would likely thrive in a working environment or with an experienced handler who understands the needs of this breed. He currently lives with our older female Shepherd and visits my dad's older male Shih Tzu and does well with both of them in the home. On walks, however, he can become reactive toward other dogs and will try to chase or pull toward them, so he will need continued leash training and someone confident handling strong, energetic dogs. He has a dominant and stubborn personality, and because of that he responds best to a firm, experienced handler. At this time he does not allow my wife to walk him and prefers a more assertive handler. He is generally good with our kids, but due to his energy and intensity he should always be supervised around children. I also want to be completely transparent: he did bite my wife once when she accidentally startled him while he was sleeping. Because of that, he would likely do best in a home that understands dog body language and can provide consistent training and boundaries. Despite these challenges, he is a dog we truly love. He is loyal, affectionate with his people, and incredibly capable. In the right home-especially with someone experienced with Belgian Malinois or other working breeds-he has the potential to be an amazing companion and working partner.
