About DEXTER

Adoption Fee: $475
Shih Tzu
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

DEXTER is a 5-year-old, 10 pound Shih Tzu surrendered to the rescue to find a new home. He is a shy boy looking for a quiet home with a family who will help him gain confidence. Another small dog and a fenced yard are musts for him. DEXTER is a sweet little guy who can be a bit skittish at first. He seems to prefer women and will bark when the foster's husband or son enters the bedroom, but he is not aggressive. Once he feels comfortable, he enjoys being held and petted and loves being close to his person. He follows his foster mom or foster sister everywhere and clearly enjoys being part of whatever is going on. One of his cutest habits is rolling onto his back to show his belly while he sleeps and snores. DEXTER gets along well with other dogs and sometimes plays with his foster sister. He tends to follow her lead and even goes outside with her. He came from a situation where dogs were his constant companions and he will be best in a home with a small, calm companion dog. His behavior with cats is unknown, and he won't be comfortable in a home with kids. DEXTER is not yet potty trained and currently wears a belly band inside the house to help with his training. His foster takes him outside every 2-3 hours, and he often follows his foster sister outside. He does not use a doggy door and will need a family willing to continue working on his house training. He is also not leash trained. We are looking for a home with a fenced yard. DEXTER enjoys treats but has lost most of his teeth, so treats need to be broken into small pieces. He has not shown much interest in toys yet. At night, he sleeps in bed with his foster family (wearing his belly band). He hasn't learned how to use dog stairs, so he needs help getting onto the couch or bed. DEXTER is neutered, up to date on shots, had a dental, is heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. *To meet or adopt one of our dogs, you must first submit an adoption application for review.
