Sage is an almost 8-month-old, spayed female chocolate and white Pit Bull mix weighing about 28 pounds. She came to us as an owner surrender after being found as a stray. The family who found her kept her for about two weeks but ultimately had to surrender her because their current dog did not get along with Sage. During that short time, we were able to learn some helpful things about her. Sage does well in a crate and is mostly potty-trained, giving her a great foundation for her future home. Sage is a smart young dog who already knows several commands including sit, heel, leave it, drop it, focus, off, and wait/stop. She takes correction well and clearly wants to please, which will make continued training very rewarding. During temperament testing, we did notice that Sage will need someone with patience and consistency during playtime. She gets very excited and tends to be mouthy, and when she gets worked up her brain sometimes forgets about manners. She responds well to redirection and correction, but she will need someone committed to helping her learn appropriate play behavior. We suspect that early in her life she may have been played with using hands rather than toys. Even though Sage loves toys, she will often try to play with people's hands and doesn't quite realize that her mouth can hurt. With patience, consistency, and continued redirection to toys, she should continue to improve. Sage walks on a leash but does pull, especially when she spots another dog because she becomes excited. If she goes to a home with another dog, it would be best if that dog is confident and able to correct her overzealous play style and help teach her better dog manners. She has shown no signs of possessiveness or aggression over food or toys, and she has also shown that she does not mind cats, largely ignoring them when they are around. Sage is a very sweet, eager-to-please young dog who truly wants to learn and be part of a family. She simply needs a patient and dedicated owner who will help guide her through her puppy energy and continue teaching her how to play appropriately. With the right home, Sage has the potential to grow into an amazing and loyal companion.
