Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Sex: Male

Meet Kota Bear - A Loving Companion Looking for the Right Home Kota Bear was born on February 1, 2019, and was purchased from a reputable breeder in Canton, Ohio. He was originally acquired by Geauga County Job and Family Services and professionally trained to serve as a therapy dog for the Geauga County Child Advocacy Center. Kota excelled in this role and participated in several hundred forensic interviews with children who had experienced traumatic circumstances. During interviews, he would sit quietly beside the child, allowing them to pet him for comfort and reassurance. He was truly exceptional at providing calm support during very difficult moments. When Kota was about one year old, he was accidentally struck with a metal trash can by a custodial worker at the Prosecutor's Office, where he regularly accompanied staff. After that incident, he developed a fear response toward that individual and would bark when he saw him. Unfortunately, when Kota was about four years old, he unexpectedly encountered the same worker and bit his ankle. As a result of this incident, Kota was required to retire from his therapy role. Because I had been his handler, the county released him to me, and he has been our family pet since then. Kota weighs approximately 50 pounds. He does not do well with small dogs and will pull and bark aggressively if he sees one. Recently, while preparing to take him for a walk with my granddaughter, he saw a neighbor's 5-pound dog, ran out the door, and attacked it. Thankfully, the other dog was not seriously injured. Kota can get along with dogs his size or larger if properly introduced while wearing a muzzle. After about 5-10 minutes, he typically becomes acclimated and interacts appropriately. He is wonderful with babies, small children, older kids, and adults. He is affectionate, loves to snuggle, and enjoys playing with his toys. He is very well trained and does not exhibit the typical 'Wheaten Greetin' jumping behavior. My wife and I both work full time, and since Kota can no longer accompany me to work, he spends 8-10 hours a day in his crate. We love him deeply, but we believe it is unfair for him to continue living this way. We are also concerned about the potential liability of him harming a small dog in the future. This is truly heartbreaking for our family. We are hoping to find an experienced, responsible home-preferably without small dogs-where Kota can receive the time, attention, and structure he deserves. If you believe you may be a good fit for Kota Bear, please feel free to call me. I am happy to answer any questions and discuss whether this could be the right match. Scott 440-226-1595
