About Papaya

Yorkie mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Meet Papaya!! This sweet girl has been through a lot. She is one of the 13 dogs we took in from a horrible hoarding situation. She survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water and no electricity for a very long time. Papaya was covered in matting, burrs, and tumors which have been removed. She was also terrified and very withdrawn when she came to her foster home. This sweet calm girl has been learning to trust again and recovering from her previous life. She is affectionately called Pappy and has been a scared but sweet girl. She's quiet and reserved. Her foster often forgets she is there until she hears her cute snores. Papaya is an approx. 5-6 yr old female. She weighs 16 Pounds and is full grown. She is already spayed, be up to date on vaccines and microchipped. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. This sweet baby was groomed and once the matting was gone we discovered several tumors on her stomach. We've had them all removed and a biopsy done. Four out of five were benign. One came back as low level carcinoma. The vet was able to remove it with clean margins. She's healthy now with a good prognosis from the vet but there's no way to know for sure if more will grow in the future. We know that's a lot to take in but we hope someone out there will chose to love her and give her a wonderful home despite her not being perfect. Papaya has done good around both other dogs and cats. She is also fine with children. She doesn't mind being the only animal either. She's very easy going at the moment. She's been great about crate training as well. Because Papaya is terrified to be outside in the open, she is still working on her potty training. She is also recovering from her spay surgery and tumor removal, so we have not been pushing her to hard on training issues. She is also working on leash training. She still is very scared and needs a secure harness or collar. If given the opportunity when outside, Papaya will run and hide under something or try to climb. Close supervision is important until she is more comfortable outside. Inside, she will plop down on her bed and snooze away with no problem. Now that she is healing from her surgery, her foster is working with her every day to show her that outdoors is still a safe place. Her new owner will just need to be patient and understanding given her history. Papaya has not displayed any issues sharing food, treats, or toys with people or other animals. Even when she's scared she hasn't been aggressive at all. She's been through a lot but she's still a sweet natured lady. Papaya is very low energy at the moment but we expect she may get more spunky once she feels more confident and secure. She will likely stay lower energy overall though. If you're not afraid to put in the work to help this girl trust you then you'll end up with the most loyal companion. She definitely needs help with her training and confidence but we know with the right person she will thrive. She will need regular grooming. This requires time to get her to and from the appointments and additional expenses to pay for it. On average a dog of this breed will need grooming every 6 weeks. This should be fully considered prior to applying to adopt her. ***Do not apply to adopt one of these hoarding case dogs if you're not serious about giving them time to adjust. It's absolutely unfair to expect them to adjust in a day or two. We've had 3 adopted and returned within 24 hours of adoption for not being immediately settled and perfect in a completely new place. All returned for things we explained upfront about them. It's completely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect that from dogs that have been through what they have. The last thing they need is to be shuffled around due to adopters not listening or being serious about their needs*** Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA.
