FEE NEGOTIABLE For a Belgian Malinois, a 'standard walk' is rarely enough to satisfy their high-energy and high-drive nature. While a healthy adult dog of most breeds needs about 1 hour of walking daily, a Malinois requires a significantly more intense maintenance routine to prevent destructive behaviors like chewing, digging, or excessive barking. PLEASE HAVE A LARGE YARD AND TIME FOR HER Daily Maintenance Standards To keep a Belgian Malinois 'happily exhausted,' aim for the following daily activity levels: Total Duration: At least 90-120 minutes of vigorous physical activity. Some active owners and military handlers recommend up to 2-4+ hours of direct engagement. Intensity: Replace or supplement casual walks with high-intensity aerobic exercise, such as a 5-mile run, trail bike riding, or swimming. Frequency: It is best to split exercise into at least three 30-minute sessions to mimic natural herding behavior and manage energy spikes throughout the day. Structured Walking & Training Because they are a working breed, 'walking' should often be treated as a training opportunity rather than just a potty break: 'Job' Focused Walks: Incorporate obedience drills (heel, sit, stay, recall) or scent work during your walks to engage their brain. Mental Stimulation: Mental work is often more exhausting for them than pure physical movement. Use puzzle toys, trick training, or 'find it' games at home to supplement your outdoor time. Leash Management: Malinois have a high prey drive and may impulsively chase moving objects like cars or bikes. Consistent leash training and the use of tools like no-pull harnesses or properly fitted collars are often necessary to manage their strength. Sample Routine Morning (30-45 min): Brisk walk or jog combined with 10-15 minutes of obedience drills. Midday (30-60 min): Potty walk or a play session like fetch or frisbee. Evening (30-45 min): High-intensity activity (running, agility, or hiking) followed by a calm-down sniff walk.
