About Rory

Adoption Fee: $75
Basenji mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Carolina Dog - 5 yr old spayed female - Portland, OR When I adopted Rory, the shelter had her listed as a Basenji/Australian Shepherd mix. I researched both breeds thoroughly before bringing her home, but I had no idea what a Carolina Dog was until my phone's breed identification app flagged it from a photo. Once I started reading about the breed, everything about her suddenly made sense - and I also realized I was likely not equipped to be her ideal home long-term, though I've done my best and love her genuinely. Rory is a 5-year-old spayed female in good health and a tripod - her rear left leg was amputated before I adopted her - but you would never know it most of the time. She is energetic, athletic, and has the full personality and drive of the breed with no shortage of stamina. She is a classic red fawn with a white chest, chin, toes, and tail tip. What makes her wonderful: She is warm and friendly with everyone who comes through the door - all the barking at the threshold stops the moment you're inside and she's your best friend immediately. She loves fetch, chasing, sniffing and tracking games, exploring outdoors, and cuddling entirely on her own terms. She completed a 3-week professional board-and-train program and is smart and food motivated enough to learn just about anything. Speaking of food motivated - this girl will sit patiently at your feet watching you prep her lick mat for up to 15 minutes without being asked. With a little active engagement on the front end you can get a solid 30 minutes of calm and happy out of her. And when she puts her head in your lap and stares up at you while she drifts off to sleep, she will absolutely melt your heart. Despite being 40 pounds she is fully convinced she is a lap dog and will make her case for it at every opportunity. What she needs in a home: Rory is highly reactive and I want to be upfront about that because the right person will understand it and work with it. She is triggered by people and animals passing outside, other dogs, and animals on TV - her responses are big and vocal. She resource guards and has had vocal, non-contact conflicts with my two small dogs because of it - lots of snapping and posturing but no biting or injury. It's worth noting that her conflicts with my resident dogs are exclusively triggered by her reactive episodes - when someone walks past outside and she's already ramped up. The rest of the time she coexists peacefully with them and they share space, the couch, and even cuddle without issue. She is very strong on leash and has pulled out of a harness. She does best on neutral ground but can be inconsistent. She needs to be the center of someone's world. Ideally a single-dog or experienced-dog household with an active person who can take her on long walks and outdoor adventures. She has an enormous amount of love and loyalty to give the right person. I have a physical disability limiting my mobility and two small senior dogs - I'm simply not her ideal match, and she deserves someone who is. Located in Portland, OR. Open to discussing transport for the right home. Small rehoming fee to ensure good fit. Rory is a #Carolina Dog (also known as an #AmericanDingo) - identified by breed recognition app and consistent with all breed characteristics in appearance, temperament, and behavior.
