The best words to describe Moon are: loyal, active, and playful. She has been in our family since she was 9 weeks old and she is now 2 1/2 years old. She has been around kids her entire life but she has never learned how to not be too rough with them when playing or just being around them. The herding instinct is strong in her and she will tackle small children or anyone she deems 'out of control' to get them to behave, or stay with their adult. Something unknown happened when she was around 9 months old and it was like a switch flipped. She went from being a super social, cuddly, curious dog to being very reactive, unsure, and anxious towards other dogs and humans. She will warm up to people if they give her time to let her come to them. Once she seems someone safe she loves them forever and is very affectionate and playful. But it is almost impossible to take her to places where we might run into other dogs. Some days she will play and be a normal dog and then out of nowhere she will pick a fight (she has never actually bitten another dog!) She hates small dogs. Or at least I think she would absolutely try to hunt them the way she hunts after every squirrel. I think she sees them more as prey or a toy than equals. Her favorite thing in the whole world is being able to run free in the woods. She LOVES hiking. She can do it for hours and hours, she can climb up and down tough terrain and she will make sure her 'herd' stays together. When we hike as a family she will circle our group every few seconds as if she's taking count. When one of the kids runs ahead she works a double shift running between the parts of the splintered group trying to get us to move back together. It's the cutest thing. Her favorite game is tug of war and chasing after a ball (but never actually retrieving it). She has solved any puzzle we have ever presented her with within seconds. She can find a way out of almost every enclosure and she's even climbed a few trees before. She's not much of a digger unless it means trying to dig a tunnel under the fence to get to the neighbors dog. When the weather permits she spends our days out in the 1/4 acre backyard and then comes in at night where sh sleeps in her crate. We never leave her home alone while free to roam around. She will find herself a project that usually means destruction to our home. When I have full time work days I've been keeping her on a long leash in our living room where she spends her day with the cat and her toys and chew bones until we come home and walk her and play with her. She does really well with being left unattended as long as she is corralled to a space. She is very protective of our home and would absolutely defend us if she needed to, but she has never been outwardly aggressive towards anyone. Just reactive. The other day things escalated at home and she lunged at my 9yo son and left him wounded in the face. He said she bit him, but the marks on his face look more like claw marks to me. I'm not convinced that she actually bit him. They had been playing like they have a thousand times before and it got pretty wild as usual. I wasn't directly looking at them as it happened but I suddenly heard her snarling and snapping right at his face then his screams'| The moment I called her name she jumped off of him and laid flat on the ground and showed me her belly. She knows she did wrong. She has NEVER done anything like this before to me or my children or anyone else she let near her. She isn't injured or in pain and my child didn't do anything that would have triggered this as far as I can tell. He said all he did was reach out to her to pet her and suddenly she launched herself at him. The problem is, he is special needs and to expect him to read and interpret Moon's body language is simply unrealistic. If I can't trust her to stay safe around my kids she simply can't stay in our home, even though we love her with all our hearts. With a maybe- bite history she would be euthanized at any shelter though. Please, someone come and rescue Moon Ϊ ٪%8F%8F
