About Maeby

Adoption Fee: $150
German Shepherd / Belgian Malinois
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Maeby is a special girl but has a few quirks and will need a gentle, patient hand. She is a bit timid at first but builds trust quickly. Maeby is an extremely sweet girl with a slightly anxious personality. She thrives on routine and being part of a pack. She's very wiggly and gets along well with dogs and cats. She wants to please and is food & treat motivated. She takes baths well and allows her nails to be trimmed without drama. She LOVES her crate almost as much as she loves food, and puts herself right up for meal time or any time you have a treat in your hand. She eats, naps, and sleeps in her crate but also loves to snuggle in bed with you for a movie. She loves to run & play 'tag' with our other shepherd and likes playing gently with other dogs. She's extremely athletic and would be an amazing agility dog. Now for the quirks - The first challenge (or skill?) is that she climbs metal fences like ladders, which is how she came into foster - she had escaped the Thorndale pound a few times and was living on the street for a while before she 'chose' our foster by following them on walks and letting herself into their yard to play with their dogs (adorable). This was solved by installing an invisible fence around the property (a hot wire would also work). The second biggest challenge with Maeby is that she has some kind of trauma around leashes and completely shuts down when you put a leash on her. She generally will just drop to the ground and it's difficult to get her to walk. Her foster didn't have as much time to devote to leash desensitization training as she would've liked and feels this may improve over time with repeated exposures and positive reinforcement. As a result of this leash fear, traditional vet visits are difficult - we recommend finding a vet that does home visits, if possible (Dr. Brinlee in Hearne for those in Milam county). Similarly, it was difficult to provide positive reinforcement for potty training, so in foster she primarily is either in her crate or outside (but has successfully been enjoying more time free in the house as of late, with no accidents in over a month). We feel Maeby would be a good outside dog with a fully enclosed secure kennel (with a roof) and a large property to run around, or as an inside dog with a crate & secure fenced yard. She would not be a good fit for an apartment at this time. Maeby has made huge strides since coming into foster 6 months ago - at first she was terrified of collars, unsure of doorways, and wasn't crate/potty trained. She's come a long way, is eager to please and has so much love to give - she just needs someone to give her a chance.
