About Rangel

Adoption Fee: $150
Australian Cattle Dog mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Rangel is a 2 year old Australian Cattle Dog mix available for adoption from West LA Animal Services. He's about 60-70lbs. He knows sit and lay down commands. He is house-trained and has done well in a crate overnight and when left alone for 2-4 hours. He's been great with men and women adults, unsure about children. He is friendly to strangers coming into the house and while on walks. He has done well sitting politely outside coffee shops and giving a friendly greeting to people who want to pet him. He does not have a history of biting but can get a little nippy at the heels when overexcited but is easily redirected with a sit command/ignoring/chew toy. He's friendly to other dogs and has been great at the dog park playing with other big dogs. Unsure about his interactions with small dogs but an enthusiastic, forward, and friendly playmate to bigger breeds. On a walk he loves to greet other dogs but can be directed to walk past politely without engaging. Unknown how he behaves with cats but does seem excited by squirrels and birds so may not be a good fit for a cat home. He is good on leash but can be startled by loud noises like trash trucks/rattling trailers/etc. He has a lot of stamina while walking and jogging and is easy to direct on the leash without too much pulling. He does pretty well in the car if he's able to lay on his bed in the trunk but seems a little stressed just sitting in the back or passenger seat. He has done just fine in an urban end (near downtown Santa Monica) but seemed even happier in more suburban Glendale with fewer loud/unexpected noises. He is a very quiet dog who rarely barks. He also will not jump on furniture and does not get into food that's been left out or beg excessively when we are cooking or eating human food. He has a very sweet temperament. In terms of behavioral cautions to note: as a working breed, he definitely needs good boundaries enforced because he does try to 'herd' people a little bit. As mentioned he can get a little nippy or want to jump if he gets riled up but can easily calm himself down if ignored or commanded to sit. He also has a lot of energy and benefits from yard/dog park play or daily walks. Rangel is a true sweetheart. He really shows affection by pressing his head into you. When you go from room to room. Rangel will follow just to check in and make sure you're alright. He's food-motivated and seems to be a quick learner if you wanted to try and teach him tricks. He's a real cuddle buddy with a ton of love to share. He is neutered and up-to-date with his vaccinations (scheduled for his last booster on 1/30) so ready to be with other dogs. No known history of medical complications. Currently, we have him fostered in Santa Monica and also spend time in Glendale at his foster-grandparents' house. Rangel is a shelter sweetheart looking for his forever home with a family who can meet his active needs and is ready for an instantly-loyal lovebug of a dog. https://www.laanimalservices.com/pet/a2252053
