Cookie - Shih Tzu - Needs a Special, Experienced-dog owner as a new Home. Cookie came to me with some undisclosed history (rehomed when he was 1.5 years) that has resulted in fear-based reactivity and mouthing behaviors. He is unlike the stereotype of lazy Shih Tzus-he loves walking, running, and playing outside! A Brief History & His Needs: When I first adopted him, I worked fully remotely and could be with him constantly. Now that my job requires a hybrid schedule, it's become clear he also struggles with significant separation anxiety. Managing his care-ensuring he's with a sitter and never alone for those 7+ hour days-has become unsustainable for me. I do not have the specialized experience, time, or financial resources to provide him with the consistent behavioral training he needs. What Cookie Needs: An adopter who is home more often or has a flexible schedule (and/or others in the home) to help him gradually work through his separation distress. A patient, experienced dog owner familiar with fear-based behaviors and positive-reinforcement training. A commitment to continued training, possibly with a professional behaviorist, to help him build confidence and trust. A predictable routine in a peaceful/lively household where he can feel secure. The Sweet Dog Beneath the Anxiety: When Cookie feels safe, he shows a sweet, goofy personality! He even 'sings' along sometimes. His capacity for love and progress is real. He's made great strides: from a dog who couldn't sit still to be held, to one who plops happily into my lap. He stopped hiding food once he learned he could trust me to provide. His progress with the right, dedicated person will be incredibly rewarding. Great Reference Available: Cookie has built a wonderful, trusting relationship with his regular Rover dog sitter (who has two toddlers), who has never experienced his reactive behaviors. I am happy to connect **serious** adopters with her for a personal testimony based in Richmond, VA.
