Courtesy Posting: URGENT AT SANTA FE, NM (NR ALBUQUERQUE) - ID #A174121 'THOR, a VERY HANDSOME CREAM PUREBRED MALE AT SANTA FE HUMANE after their owner moved and could not keep - ADOPTABLE and STUNNING PUREBRED CHOW - NEEDS LOVING FOREVER HOME OR FOSTER AND RESCUE- DOG FRIENDLY, Some transport may be considered for suitable and qualified homes. Please help us find a responsible and forever home or a foster and rescue, ideally who is chow savvy. Thor was sadly surrendered to the shelter after his owner relocated for a job and was unable to keep him in her apartment as she had hoped. Although he came in rather scared, he is already warming up to staff and has now been made available to adopt. The prior owner's sister thankfully also contacted us and provided us helpful information to help him and hopefully find the right home. We were told Thor is now but quite healthy and still quite active and playful. He was adopted at 8 weeks and he lived with a female owner previously in a home with a yard where he could run and play in, and rarely barked all these years. However, he did not adapt well to apartment life and being left for over 12 hours a day and would then bark at noises he heard. While he had not been socialized much with other people or dogs all these years, he apparently did fine meeting a maintenance man who came into the new apartment and even gave him kisses. They provided several videos with him from 12/1. However, like many chows, though, Thor needs time to warm up to strangers and may bark and or growl at them initially, so breed experience is ideal, and no smaller children in the home. It was reported Thor has been trained to sit and lay down, and will walk on a leash. However, he has also been said to be spoiled and his stubbornness can shine through because of it. We were provided recent video showing he can sometimes be mouthy in a playful way or when he does not want to do something, and we understand he has been like this since a puppy. This may be in part from pent up energy and lack of exercise and walks, as well as lack of discipline. The prior owner clarified he has never broken any skin, though. We were also told 'he is not food aggressive. He has allowed his food to given and taken from him at anytime with no reaction'. Thor enjoyed pets and scratches from his prior owner. We were also told Thor had done the same with larger dogs he has seen from afar but we are not sure how he might do with larger dogs. However, the shelter may be able to dog test or allow a meet and greet. We were also told Thor had occasionally visited a family member who has small dogs, and he enjoyed running around with one of them, while ignoring the other who did want to engage in play. We have video showing how playful Thor was with the small dog which was taken approximately 3 years ago. We were told he wanted to chase a cat he saw outside though. We were also given several more videos from 12/1 of Thor being quite calm after a family member visiting (who did not live there and sees him rarely) was able to walk him past others with no issues, as well as groom (brush) him. Thor was reported to be neutered as a puppy, and the prior owner said he is potty trained. The shelter may have additional medical notes, but we are not aware of any medical issues. Thor's adoption fee is $100 He is also microchipped and has age-appropriate vaccinations. A licensing fee may apply. The shelter has his medical records for your review and upon request, but he appears to be quite healthy.
