Bagel is a healthy 11-month-old beagle. We adopted him at the end of July after he was rescued from a hoarding situation where he experienced starvation. Since coming into our home, he has been crate trained, potty trained, and fed separately in his crate. He is playful, affectionate, and enjoys people, but he also exhibits significant anxiety and fear-based behaviors. Bagel initially did well with our four children and our older dog. However, beginning in November (around 9 months old), he developed resource guarding behaviors around food and his primary caregiver. Within a two-week period, he bit two family members (a child and an adult). These bites were inhibited but did break the skin. Since early December, we have been working closely with a professional dog behaviorist and implemented strict management and safety protocols. We have begun muzzle training, though he is not yet reliably wearing one. This decision is heartbreaking. We care deeply about Bagel and want what is best for him. We believe he would be best suited for an adult-only home, ideally without other dogs, with experienced handlers who can continue behavioral work in a low-stimulus environment.
