CODE RED AT PHOENIX, AZ - ID #A5157031 -'OSO'- HANDSOME, YOUNGER CHOW AT MARICOPA COUNTY ANIMAL CARE, WEST LOCATION- RESCUE ONLY (NHO) - TAKES TEATS GENTLY NEEDS FOSTER AND RESCUE ASAP-RESCUES CANNOT HELP WITHOUT A FOSTER AND PLACE FOR A DOG TO GO! SHY AT SHELTER SO MADE RESCUE ONLY! NOW ON DEADLINE FOR 1/12 TO COMMIT OR 'May be at risk for euthanasia 1/13/26 or sooner if warranted' per shelter. THUS, HE WILL LIKELY BE EUTHANIZED 1/13 in AM. HE IS 'RESCUE ONLY' BY A 'NEW HOPE PARTNER ONLY' which means he can NOT be adopted from the shelter directly, and a New Hope partner must pull him out. Emergency/soon to be euthanized! We are in urgent need of finding a chow savvy foster, or at least a foster familiar with chows or similar Asian or spitz breeds. 'OSO' is a stunning blue male chow weighing 59 lbs and estimated to be only 2 years old. He was found as a stray with 4 other dogs and brought to the shelter on 12/20. Sadly, because Oso has been a little shy as is so common for the breed, the shelter made him Rescue Only and put him on a short deadline of 1/12, despite him warming up. We just received video we will post on Facebook showing him gently taking treats. Shelter notes from 12/31 state, 'Dog was on outer portion; tried verbally coaxing in with treats; not interested; remained on outer portion; closed divider; pulled dog from back; dog was sitting at front of kennel; offered treat; not interested; opened kennel door; circled to back of kennel; came back to front; used large loop to leash over head; exited; moderate pull; kept looking back at handler. Entering yard, dog pulled away from handler; let go of leash; explored; remained on opposite side of yard; stood in middle of yard; watched handler; tried verbal coaxing with treats; not interested; continued exploring; would not approach handler; staff walked past yard; dog quickly darted across to opposite side of yard; stood in corner; stood in corner; tossed treats; not interested; handler tried slowly approaching; dog quickly moved away; dog got leash off; opened door to catch pen; entered catch pen; allowed handler to slowly place leash over; remained still; exited yard; dog pulled hard as if trying to get away from handler; continued looking back and pulling hard; entered kennel; removed with built in clip leash.' 12/30/2025 'Dog was standing outside alarm barking at handler, unable to coax in verbally or with treats, closed divider and met dog at back half of kennel. Dog was standing still near kennel door, low growling, side eyeing, not interested in hot dogs tossed in kennel. Handler was able to place leash with large loop (clip leash attached), dog quickly exited kennel and began pulling away from handler, eventually settled and walked to yard, showed no interest in other dogs, continuously looked up at handler, used verbal coaxing at times to continue walking. In yard dog flinched and pulled away as handler lowered leash stopper, added leash extension, dog began exploring yard, nose to ground, body neutral, tail low, handler sat in chair, dog remained wary and kept distance from handler, tossed hot dogs around yard but dog still was not interested, chuffed and stared as handler tried to coax dog over verbally, scanned surroundings, panting and alert, easily startled. Dog followed handler into catch pen, flinched as handler slowly reached over to lift leash stopper, sniffed handler's hand, head shy but allowed light petting on head, hard pull back to kennel, easy return, used clip leash.' Additional behavior and medical details may be found on this link: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/priority/Details/OTI4-MjY1-NThB Oso was reported to have some nasal discharge on 12/30 and was placed on antibiotics. We are urgently looking for ideally a foster or foster to adopt for Oso, and chow, Asian and or spitz breed experience recommended. This shelter has made many chow and chow mixes Rescue only, and already killed many who were also shy and young adults. Please do not let this young boy meet the same awful fate. If you may be interested in fostering, fostering to adopt, or helping in some other way (ie., pledging for his rescue), please email [email protected] asap at Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, AND also fill out a foster application on https://dogfoster.org/ and https://azfosters.com/ so all entities can work on pairing a foster to a rescue group to help. Rescues can assist with neuter and medical. Rescue groups may contact the shelter directly at: [email protected] and by calling 602-506-7387 and providing ID.
