If you'd like to help us continue our mission, please donate at: https://www.blinddogrescue.org/donate-1. Name: Birdie Age: Estimated anywhere between 8-10 Breed: Australian Shepherd Sex: Female (spayed) Location: Benton County, Oregon Poor Birdie did not have a good start, she was rescued 3 years ago with 20+ other dogs that were neglected and abused for multiple years. Vet Info: Birdie has had the best of medical care with her owner who is studying to be a vet. Birdie is up to date with her vaccinations and HW-. She has congenital deafness and micro-ophthalmia. She is fully blind in her right eye and while her left eye has some vision it is very impaired. Birdie also has dental disease. Birdie also gets the normal sebaceous cysts that pop up and go away on their own. Dog Info: Birdie is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She is house broken and leash trained. She knows the commands: sit, stay, and lay down. She has never had any formal obedience training. She is good with men and women and all animals. Owner has no children so doesn't know how she would be with children. Birdie is reactive to strangers but owner feels 'when Birdie is given the patience she needs during introductions, and you use lots of positive reinforcement at the beginning, she will undoubtedly turn into the sweetest, most affectionate dog you've ever met. She endlessly asks for cuddles and affection, will kiss your face and hands any chance she gets, and is an unbelievably rewarding dog to earn the affection of.' Birdie's owner adds that Birdie is, 'the sweetest, most affectionate dog I've ever met. Unfortunately, she does have some trauma that she deals with, separation anxiety, along with an intense reactivity and discomfort with strangers. She's not aggressive, but she is very reactive. With her special needs, along with her reactivity and anxiety, she requires some special care. Birdie is generally good around other dogs and cats (lives happily with four cats and a dog).' When she meets other dogs, 'she generally will ignore them, but will correct them if they don't give her the space she is asking for. She's never attacked any other animal though, just quick correction to tell them she wants space. She never ever does that around our other animals in the house though, only to dogs she meets. She grew up outside among other dogs, so she knows how to be cordial. The one thing she can do at the beginning is resource protect when she is being loved on, and another animal comes in her vicinity. It's usually just a little growl to let them know, and she responds to us telling her that's not okay. This behavior falls away once she gets more comfortable with those animals.' **Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs who are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them.
