About April

Meet April! April has not had the easiest start to life, but you would never know it from her sweet, happy personality. April was seized and brought to a shelter in Georgia as part of a neglect case. For a long time, people driving by her home would see her tied outside day after day with a thick, heavy rope under a tree, surrounded by trash and often without food or water. Her situation became especially heartbreaking when she was left outside in 20-degree weather with nothing but a metal trash can to curl up in. Thankfully, April was finally removed from that situation and brought to the shelter, where she waited for her second chance. After spending some time there, she caught a ride north to Wisconsin with Mutt Life Dog Rescue. April spent some time in a Wisconsin foster home before being adopted by a wonderful couple who wanted to give her the life she deserved. They absolutely loved April, but unfortunately, they discovered that her leash reactivity made their lifestyle a difficult fit. They traveled frequently to dog-friendly locations and hotels, and navigating busy areas where they would regularly pass other dogs became too challenging for them. April is now being fostered with Mutt Life Dog Rescue again and is ready to find the family who will be her forever. April is otherwise an amazing dog. She is loving, friendly, happy, playful, smart, and eager to be part of her family's life. She loves kids, gets along with cats, and lives peacefully with several other dogs. She is generally fine passing other dogs while on leash, but she can occasionally have an outburst when a strange dog walks by. She has been working hard on this and has had lots of training. Her leash reactivity is something her future family will need to continue working on, but it does not define who April is. April would do best with a family who understands that she may not be the dog you take to a busy dog-friendly hotel where you're constantly passing unfamiliar dogs in tight spaces. Instead, she would love a family who can enjoy her in everyday life and continue helping her build confidence and good leash skills. She deserves a family who will see past her one challenge and appreciate everything else that makes her such a wonderful dog. April has already overcome so much. Now she just needs someone willing to give her the time, patience, and love to help her continue becoming the best version of herself.Adoption fees include the cost of spay/neuter procedure, up to date dewormer, vaccinations, and heartworm prevention (age appropriate). Apply: Fill out adoption application completely and submit all necessary documents. 2.)Application Decision: approved applicants will be notified via phone call and email. 3.)Foster-to-Adopt Trial Period: after approval, you have the opportunity to do a meet and greet and bring your dog home! You get a 5 day foster-to-adopt (FTA) period to make sure its the right fit. 4.) Final Decision: By the end of the FTA period, please let us know your final decision to adopt or return the dog to our rescue. 5.) Home Visit: After the adoption process we conduct a home visit either in person or via zoom meeting to ensure that everything is going well with the transition and to answer any final questions you may have. 6.) Neuter/spay for puppies: for dogs who are not fixed at the time of adoption, we will reimburse for the procedure once we receive proof of spay/neuter. The procedure MUST be done at HAWS Snip Clinic in Waukesha, WI or Wisconsin Community Veterinarian Center in Madison, WI. If you would like to go through your veterinarian or another location, we will reimburse $125 once we receive proof of the procedure.
