Courtesy Posting: X URGENT, WILL BE ADDED TO EUTH/RED LIST or KILLED ANYTIME- Riverside County Shelter, Jurupa Valley location, So Cal - ID #A1892439- 'CHOWDER'- ONLY 1 YR OLD, 49 LBS! ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE CHOW BOY AT GREAT RISK IN HIGH KILLSHELTER, FOUND AS A STRAY, BUT WALKED IN- needs ADOPTER OR FOSTER AND RESCUE TO SAVE HIS LIFE- SEE VIDEOS WE HAVE, TAKES TREATS GENTLY HELP!!! CHOWDER CAME OFF HIS STRAY HOLD 12/22 AND WAS IMMEDIATELY LISTED AS 'RESCUE NEEDS' WHICH EXPEDITES HIM TO THE RED/EUTH LIST OR EVEN EUTHANIZED W NO WARNING, HE CAN STILL BE ADOPTED OR RESCUED WITH A WAIVER. THE SHELTER IS OVERFULL and EUTHANIZING YOUNG ADOPTABLE DOGS FOR MINOR REASONS WE ARE LOOKING FOR EITHER A CHOW SAVVY HOME, OR A FOSTER AND RESCUE FOR CHOWDER as the shelter named him. We understand he was walked in by someone who said they found him. He is currently kenneled alone and, initially, the shelter claimed they could only do a limited exam due to temperament. We were given two videos showing a shy boy who shows not aggression in video, but the shelter let us know he shows teeth when approached too closely, so he seems to be scared like many chows in a shelter environment. It should be noted the shelter said this is with his ears back, a sign of fear. We sent a volunteer to meet him who was able to coax him closer to the kennel fence shyly. As of 12/24, he was making slow but positive progress taking treats gently as seen in video the shelter just provided. Updated 'new behavior note: 12/24/25 08:18 Attempting to work with dogs behavior in an attempt to find rescue/adopter - offered high value wet food - at first dog was trembling with avoidant gaze facing body away uninterested in interacting with handler - after throwing a few meatballs at his feet that he ate he eventually stopped trembling and sat with his body towards me. After some time when offered wet food from my hand he slowly licked at food but quickly disengaged with fast movement. During encounter dogs behavior remains typical of breed. go slow if handling. Walked a helper dog near kennel and dog appeared tolerant/nonreactive of dog passing by kennel - due to behavior unable to leash to do a dog2dog assessment in yard.' Unfortunately, because the shelter is so full, Chowder was just made 'Rescue needs' as they have done with most of the chows who have recently come into this same shelter who are fearful. Being 'Rescue Needs' means he will be added to the euthanasia list, possibly today, and wil;l then need to be saved usually 72 hours or less. They also sometimes euthanize without warning or being on the Red list when they are coded as 'Rescue needs' which he is. Therefore, if you are savvy and interested in adopting Chowder, please contact the shelter immediately by calling (951) 358-7387 and reference his applicable ID and also use his listing link to express interest (but this will not place a hold). If you are interested to foster, or foster to adopt, or if you need further help, please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network asap as we are trying to find fosters we can then refer to a rescue group to save Chowder in time. If you are a rescue group and interested in pulling this adorable young man, Chowder, please email the shelter right away at: [email protected] and call (951) 358-7302.
