About Fruit Bat

American Staffordshire Terrier / Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

BREED BREAKDOWN: According to Batty's genetic breed test (Wisdom Panel), she is a mix of 10 breeds. Like most American Street Dogs she's mainly a terrier mix. Unsurprisingly, Fruit Bat is part American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and Bulldog (89% total). Surprisingly, she's also got a dash of Chow Chow, Siberian Husky, and Alaskan Malamute (9% total). APPEARANCE: This means she's a little funny looking. Huge ears (hence the name Fruit Bat), big hazel eyes and interesting charcoal coat color that seems to change color (gray, silver, brown, black?) depending on the light and area of her body, plus a weird fringe of hair on her tail and the back of her hind legs. Her fur is smooth in places and a little wiry in others. She's very fast, lean, and agile - at first we thought she was part Whippet. WEIGHT: 35 pounds (16 kg) BAT'S STORY: Batty was a street dog. Her backbone and ribs were visible when she was brought to the animal shelter. She's loving being an indoor dog and living the good life now. When Bat was adopted, her new human planned to keep her for life. Then they experienced serious health issues. Batty has been in temporary foster care, but her caretaker is moving and can't take her with them. There's been a lot of upheaval in this little girl's life, and it would be wonderful to find her a permanent home! PERSONALITY: Fruit Bat is a sweet and lovable idiot. She only has room in her brain for one thought at a time. While she may not be bright, she is emotionally intelligent and will pick up on how her people are feeling. She's happy to interact with people whether it's cuddling, walking, or playing. Batty likes other dogs and loves going to doggy daycare. She was placed with the low to medium energy group of dogs because she has an 'on/off' switch, meaning she plays in spurts and likes her down time in between. This is also great because she'll be active when her humans are but is also content to relax when her humans do. She does like cats, but they don't like her. She stresses them out because she tries to play, they run, she chases, gets smacked, and pouts. Being a dog of very little brain and positive mindset, Batty keeps trying, even though no one is having fun. So going to a cat-free home is best. TRAINING: knows sit, down, stay (for short periods), comes when called. Due to separation anxiety she is crated when no one is home to avoid property destruction. She does like her crate (that's where she gets chews and breakfast) and will go in voluntarily when she wants some 'den time' to herself. She walks well on a leash but for whatever reason doesn't like to go potty while on a leash. This wasn't a problem at her first home which had a yard, but it has made it difficult for her current fosterer who lives in a second floor apartment! For this reason (and the fact Bat loves doing zoomies), she needs to go to a house with a yard. HEALTH: Fruit Bat is a very healthy dog. Per her Wisdom Panel genetic test, she's clear of over 250 health issues. She received the Proheart 12 injection and is covered for another 6 months against heartworms. Her mom (a vet tech) took great care of her. She even had her teeth professionally cleaned! Bat has no known food allergies. Due to near starvation, Batty has a food scarcity brain and will eat anything. For this reason, she gets scheduled meals. If her food bowl was full all the time, she'd eat until she made herself sick. ACCESSORIES: So many. Batty's mom spoiled her rotten and she comes with an assortment of items.
