About Toby

Toby was rescued off the Urgent list from being euthanized. He was going to be put to sleep possibly over the weekend. He is the sweetest, friendliest boy you'd ever meet! They estimated him to be a year old, and they said he was an Australian Shepherd X Husky Mix. We believe he's likely a Heeler X Husky mix maybe with something else. He definitely has the cattle dog mentality, with the husky brain and friendliness. Toby enjoys giving kisses and giving you his paw, and will occasionally jump up to give you a hug but he is very gentle and not excitable. He listens well to 'No.' and we think he'd be an easily trainable dog. Although he is likely a husky, in the time we have had him he doesn't make much noise and doesn't howl. He does amazing with kids, and loves them very much and men (even tall ones) and lets you take away his food and toys, mess with his paws/mouth, and is food motivated. Toby is potty trained as long as you keep him on a schedule (we have been taking him out two-three times a day on a leash) and leash trained. He does better with a harness, if he is only on the leash with his collar he sometimes will pull. Toby is a very smart boy! But I think he definitely would benefit from having a job or at least a backyard to play in. He was animal tested at the shelter, and did well with other dogs. He was also tested around an aggressive dog and did well, he just ignored the dog. I am unsure how he would do with cats. Toby doesn't like being crated but gets destructive when being left alone, when being alone he started to tear up our carpets. Unfortunately, being in a rented townhome this isn't the best situation for him. Since we don't have a fenced in backyard, I think us being his foster parents is the best course of action for now! We love him and think he is probably bored, and doesn't really know entirely how to play yet. He may need another dog (or more active person) to teach him how! He isn't super into mental enrichment (kong/lick mat) so a fenced in yard/farm/somewhere for him to run/or even a playmate may be great for him! He would be VERY easily trainable to do many things we think, he is very smart and we can already tell he would like to learn. If you are interested in Toby we'd love to talk further! He is the best boy, he just needs some enrichment and he will be an amazing pet. Toby will come with his collar, harness, crate, some toys and his current dog food. The adoption fee is only to ensure he goes to a good home.
